Superbe exemplaire de ce livre d'artiste peu commun tiré à très petit nombre avec une très belle gravure de Charles Marq. * ** André Frénaud (1907-1993)est l'un des poètes français les plus significatifs de la génération qui, dans la seconde moitié du 20e siècle, succède au mouvement surréaliste. Après des études secondaires à Dijon, il poursuit dans les voies de la Philosophie et du Droit à Paris. Il est en 1930 lecteur de français à l'Université de Lwów (en Pologne à cette époque), voyage en Russie, Espagne et Italie. Il entre en 1937 dans une administration publique qu'il ne quittera qu'en 1967. Mobilisé en 1939 il est fait prisonnier et passe deux ans en captivité dans le Brandebourg avant d'être libéré et renvoyé en France grâce à de faux papiers. Ayant commencé à écrire en 1938, ses poèmes paraissent, sous le pseudonyme de "Benjamin Phelisse", dans les publications clandestines de la Résistance dirigées par Paul Éluard, notamment L'Honneur des poètes, et il participe activement à la revue Messages de Jean Lescure. Ses recueils sont par la suite régulièrement publiés chez Gallimard, ainsi que des entretiens avec Bernard Pingaud sur sa poésie et la création poétique en général. Il est l'un des signataires du Manifeste des 121 sur le droit d'insoumission dans la guerre d'Algérie, paru le 6 septembre 1960. Fonctionnaire, il est alors puni par l'État de plusieurs mois de suspension. Il reçoit en 1973 le Grand Prix de poésie de l'Académie française, en 1985 le Grand Prix national de Poésie et, en 1989, le Grand prix de poésie de la SGDL (Société des gens de lettres). Frénaud a noué des amitiés durables avec les peintres Raoul Ubac et Jean Bazaine dont il accompagne de ses préfaces les expositions. Ses poèmes sont également illustrés par de nombreux autres artistes. Il a collaboré fructueusement avec l'éditeur, poète et artiste Pierre-André Benoit (PAB) à Alès. Après s'être marié dans les années 1950 avec Christiane Bailly, André Frénaud épouse le 8 juin 1971 la relieuse Monique Mathieu qui développe depuis quelques années une uvre importante et personnelle soutenue par des bibliophiles de premier plan. Le couple acquiert et restaure une maison ancienne à Bussy-le-Grand, en Côte-d'Or, et y aménage un atelier où Monique Mathieu reliera nombre d'ouvrages de son mari ainsi que de leurs amis littérateurs et peintres. Il meurt à Paris le 21 juin 1993. * ** Charles Marq (1923-2006), est un maître-verrier, peintre et graveur français. En 1944, Charles Marq suit les cours de dessin de la ville de Paris de Robert Lesbounit. C'est en 1946 qu'il rencontre Brigitte Simon, la fille du maître-verrier rémois Jacques Simon. Ils se marient en 1949 et reprennent ensemble l'atelier paternel à Reims. C'est là qu'il apprend l'art du vitrail. Il exécute à partir de 1956 des vitraux avec Jacques Villon, Roger Bissière et Marc Chagall pour la cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz. C'est avec Jacques Villon qu'il grave ses premières eaux-fortes en 1958 et c'est en 1959 qu'il fait la rencontre de Joseph Sima qui l'incite à peindre et avec lequel il entretiendra une longue amitié. Leur gratuité me récompense bien au-delà de ma peine. . Ce n'est rien, ce rien qui ouvre les portes d'un autre monde C'est sans importance et ne pèse pas. . Si un poème et un tout il mérite d'être imprimé seul, de constituer un livre. . La succession des pages n'ajoute rien à la recherche (elles se multiplient au gré du texte avec la monotonie de la stricte obéissance). . Voilà une partie de mes jeux imprimés, la plus insignifiante et pourtant la plus significative. . Une toute petite page cache bien la recherche qui généralement éclate sur une grande surface. . Il est plus facile de se cacher dans une petite chose que dans une grande. Si l'on est découvert, ce n'est que pour l'oeil averti dont on n'a pas à craindre le viol. . On ne peut guère parler de la vanité de ces petits objets, ils sont trop près du néant et restent si peu visibles. . Je ne souhaitais pas que l'on montre ces amusements, ils perdent tout ce qui faisait leur charme : une intimité amoureuse. . Une page, et à plus forte raison quand c'est celle des titres, est un tableau. Elle est un équilibre et une économie. . On attache trop d'importance à l'effet qui n'est qu'une illusion et non à l'objet, pour lui-même, puisqu'il existe. . N'est-ce pas une invitation au jeu, à la recherche de ce qui est le plus oublié en nous : l'enfance, à la reconnaissance de ce qui est humble et discret, naïf et prometteur N'est-ce pas, si on a l'âme à fleur de peau, une invitation à l'enchantement, n'est ce pas tout simplement une évasion à la mesure de ces livres. » Oct. 52 [PAB] Très bel exemplaire.
