Born in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris, Charles Jouas attended several workshops, including that of Georges Clairin, a student of Isidore Pi…ls, and of Henri Regnault. He worked on opera sets with Auguste Rubé and Chaperon. He participated in the decoration of the Tours theater. From the 1890s he became involved with the symbolist-inspired painter Louise Desbordes whom he married in 1906. From 1894 they had a workshop at 3 bis Cour de Rohan in Paris 6th. In 1896 Jouas introduced himself to Henri Beraldi, a great bibliophile and publisher. Beraldi immediately sees the young man's talent and the use he can make of it. He first loaded it with a series of drawings of Paris, then the illustration of Parisian Poems by Émile Goudeau. A long collaboration began between them, with the engraver Henri Paillard who engraved Jouas's drawings. In 1897, they found themselves in the Pyrenees, in Luchon, Beraldi's summer resort. They undertake long races, of which Jouas brings back numerous drawings. The major project is to illustrate the bibliophile's monumental chronicle, One Hundred Years in the Pyrenees. The material will be there, numerous illustrations which are obviously intended for the edition, most of them being engraved by Paillard. But the book was published without illustrations, with the exception of the vignettes which adorn the covers of the seven volumes: the portraits of Ramond, Lézat, Russell, Nansouty, Schrader, Chausenque, Peytier and Hossard. Jouas also illustrated bibliophile works, including La Cathédrale by Joris-Karl Huysmans, La Cité des Eaux by Henri de Régnier and Le Vauban by Daniel Halévy. He took up engraving, and became president of the Engraving section of the National Society of Fine Arts. He exhibited between 1915 and 1920 in the Chaine et Simonson gallery, rue Caumartin.
