Charles John Fielding (b. 1761) was the younger son of the Earl of Denbigh: the poem is dedicated to his brother William, styled Viscount Feilding. This is a somewhat sentimental poem in a pastoral mode: the brothers are two shepherds, and at the end the poet reveals that he is to be identified with Damon, and his brother William with Dorylas: 'May'st thou, blest Youth, with endless laurel cround, Renown'd for conquest, as for worth renown'd, Long live thy Country's firm defence to prove, And gain a Nation's, as a Brother's love!' The young Lord Feilding (b. 1760) was indeed an army officer, and raised a regiment of light dragoons in 1794; he died in 1799 the year before his father.
