Erstausgabe
First Edition. First edition thus, 12mo, [bound with, as issued:] The Petition and Argument of Mr. Hotham and A True State of the Case of Mr. Hotham; pp. 59, [1] , 142, [4], 93, [1], plus 2-page errata; containing the first printing of the 60-page introduction and errata leaf at the end, and second printings of The Petition and A True State, both of the latter having been printed earlier the same year; contemporary sheep rebacked, red morocco label lettered in gilt on spine, some wear to extremities along with a few dings and nicks to the covers, occasional stains, and a few page numbers shaved, but still a very good copy. Hotham (1615-1672?], university preacher, proctor, and fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1650 preached against the "Engagement" and was forbidden to raise the subject again. He petitioned the committee for the reformation of the university against Dr. Lazarus Seaman, master of Peterhouse. Dissatisfied with the results, he published his Petition, along with some caustic remarks concerning the committee. He was soon after deprived of his fellowship. In an effort to vindicate himself, he then published a pamphlet in which he stated his case, and included a testimonial to his character, signed by 30 leading men at the university. He reprinted both works, along with a lengthy introduction addressed to Parliament, and issued them together. Wing H2895.
