The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the first blank, dated 1890. An engaging account of Charles Frederic Moberly Bell's travels through Egypt, with illustrations throughout by Georges Montbard, engraved by Charles Barbant. Charles Frederic Moberly Bell (1847-1911) was a British journalist and newspaper editor. He was the managing director of The Times during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with light shelf wear to the extremities, joints and head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with just the occasional spot to the end papers. Very Good. book.

[Russian Adventure] 'New Edition'. Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.xii; 377 [1]. With a folding map and illustrations by Ferat and Barbant, including a frontispiece. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Yellow-coated endpapers. Ink names to endpapers. Contents generally clean. Binding shows acceptable wear with joints rubbed, corners pushed, frayed at spine tips, inner paper joints cracked as usual. Very good. Verne's classic tale of adventure and intrigue in the Russian Empire, which was first published in English in 1877; also includes Verne's novella 'The Mutineers' which was omitted from most printings after 1912. Provenance; H.A.V. Bulleid, M.A. (1912-2009) writer, film-maker and cinema historian, and an amateur bibliographer of Jules Verne.

Second UK edition. Original blue cloth with titles and illustrations in black and gilt to the spine and upper board. All edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with black and white engravings by Jules Férat and Charles Barbant. A very good copy, the binding firm, the extremities with light wear, the spine a touch faded, slight cracking to the internal page hinges. There is a school prize plate on the front free endpaper, light spotting to the text block edge, a few fingermarks throughout, and without the plain tissue-guard from the frontispiece. VG-. ** Un album di qualità: Charles Barbant fu un celebre incisore su legno parigino, tra i principali illustratori di Verne e spesso incisore dei disegni del Dorè. Cfr. Elveticat (Biblioteca N.le Svizzera), mentre Perret cita solo un'opera di Barbant e Boetzel -presente anche in Helveticat- dal titolo "Le Lac de Geneve" di formato più piccolo.

Technic: Wood engraving, colorit: original colored, condition: Tear on the outer edge expertly restored, size (in cm): 32 x 45,5 cm, View shows the hot air balloon at the Paris World Fair in 1878. Giffard was a French engineer, who created a few models of balloons, and who also managed to create navigable ones. The 1878 hot air balloon was located in the Tuileries. For a fee, visitors could enter its gondola and admire the view of the city. The balloon could go up to about half a mile. After the original drawing by Henri Louis Scott (1846-1884) and Jules Férat (1892-1906).

Two scenes replicating two engravings illustrating the 1877 edition of François Guizot's L'histoire d'Angleterre depuis les temps les plus reculés jusqu'à l'avénement de la reine Victoria (vol. 1). These are the plate titled: Marie Stuart jure quelle n'a jamais cherché la mort d'Elisabethon p. 605, and the following plate titled: Élisabeth se leva et donna un soufflet a son insolet sujet on p. 617.The first scene sees Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) on the right, rising from a seat where she has been reading, her ladies beside her in attitudes of distress, looking graciously to left towards the lords who bring her news of her impending execution, one of them holding a scroll, with fully armed guards following. As the caption of the illustration reports, Mary swore she did not conjure against Elizabeth, swearing by holding her hand on the New Testament she was reading from.The other scene depicts Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) striking her favourite Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1565-1601), when she found him guilty of treason. He was then put on trial and eventually sentenced to death.The artist realizing the sculpted scenes copied the positions of the characters especially. The background is remarkably detailed. The characters act in highly decorated interiors, with walls covered in tapestries and painted ceilings.There are two other such panels preserved in England, at Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire, invv. 784781.1 and 784781.2. The first of the two can be associated with the plate titled: George Douglas tira le poignard de Darnley et trappa le secrétaire (p. 567), whereas the second, representing Shakespeare visiting Elizabeth at court, is not present in the volume. Bas-reliefs realized in wood, covered in gesso (plaster) and coated with paint to mimic the texture of ivory. Within black wooden frames; total: 420 x 310 mm. In good condition.
