Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. 2nd Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original 1843 publication in original full leather binding. The exterior is the reason for the poor condition grade as both boards are detached and large section of spine is missing. There is also remnants of old cloth tape across the top. Despite the condition of the exterior the internal binding is good and text pages are tight. Paper is toned due to age and scattered foxing/spotting is present. There is some very light dampstains on the lower outside corners which for the most part is outside of the text area though a few of the light stains touch the corner of the lower paragraphs. The last few pages have a much larger stain that covers almost half the page (see photo). Front pastedown contains namestamps of attorney Charles M. Swain stamped twice. There is a second owner stamp, this one located on page 9 and 90, which states "Library of Harry J. Applestein, Pittsburgh, PA". Both of these are noted names in Pittsburgh's history. Tan cloth boards are soiled and darkened. Leather labels on spine are brittle and cracked with numerous chips and sections missing. Some parts of the labels were found inside of book. Front pastedown contains the law publisher business label of Geo. T. Bisel Company along with the stamped name of the Pennsylvania attorney who likely had the book rebound. Interior pages are toned/darkened due to age and spotting/foxing is present. Binding on the textblock is good and pages are tight. The only issue found with binding are some thin openings starting at both board. No handwriting found on text pages, no library markings. The title page has a small area missing near the lower right corner, is also shows an old repair on the underside (copyright page). Per Wikipedia, Charles Bingham Penrose (February 1, 1862 - February 28, 1925) Was An American Gynecologist, Surgeon, Zoologist And Conservationist, Known For Inventing A Type Of Surgical Drainage Tubing Called The Penrose Drain. He Was A Professor At The University Of Pennsylvania, Wrote Several Editions Of A Textbook On Medical Problems In Women, And Was Named A Fellow Of The American Association For The Advancement Of Science. After He Contracted Tuberculosis In 1891, Penrose Left Pennsylvania For Wyoming, Hoping That The Change In Climate Would Restore His Health. While He Was In Wyoming, Penrose Became Involved In The Range Conflict Known As The Johnson County War; He Was Arrested After The Deaths Of Two Alleged Cattle Rustlers, And Only His Friendship With The Governor Of Wyoming Prevented Him From Being Lynched.
