Le numéro s'inscrit dans le répertoire des revues des Folies-Bergère écrites par Louis Lemarchand sous la direction de Paul Derval, qui avait donné quelques années plus tôt, avec La Folie du jour (1926-1927), l'un des triomphes de Joséphine Baker. La composition de Paul Colin, dont la rencontre avec Baker en 1925 lors de La Revue nègre avait orienté une partie de son uvre graphique vers l'imagerie afro-parisienne de l'entre-deux-guerres, prolonge ici le vocabulaire déployé dans son célèbre portfolio Le Tumulte Noir (1927). Le titre lui-même, qui reprend le terme « bamboula » (désignant à l'origine un tambour puis une danse d'Afrique et des Antilles, avant sa récupération dépréciative par le discours colonial), comme les paroles du refrain, relèvent de cette mode que l'historienne Petrine Archer-Straw a nommée la négrophilie parisienne des années folles.
