No date with the inscription. Platt was an influential landscape designer and architect (he designed the Freer Gallery and several areas at Philips Academy in Andover). This volume, an extension of a pair of magazine articles, was the first US title to focus on the great Italian gardens. Scarce in any condition, even more so with Platt's signature. 'Charlie' Platt was the most influential landscape architect in the U. S. in the generation following Olmsted, Sr., and arguably this is his most influential book. Platt didn't just design gardens: his work extended to architecture proper and his designs can be found on campus at the University of Illinois, Connecticut College, and MIT (the Endicott House).
