Will you be very kind and come and auction some of the things for us at four oclock. The day of the week is a Thursday.' Front board slightly warped. Underlying boards exposed briefly here and there along the edges. Gift inscription in pencil on front flyleaf. There are small stains in the inside margins of the last seven leaves. Images include "Tortillas," "Gran Barata," "El Artesano," "Paul Fejos," "Jazz," "Passatiempo," "Manhattan," "The Weavers," "Marineros," and "Arriero." The printer, painter, and writer James Prescott Chaplin (1897-1968) was born in Seattle and raised in Boston. He was active in Los Angeles from the 1930's until his death in 1968. "Prescott Chaplin, by his temperament and his work, is very close to the spirit of that intensely active, intensely interesting little group of 19th century painters and writers who were called by the critics- for lack of a better term - the Pre-Raphaelites. "There is about him the same appreciative, omnivorous artistry that characterized William Morris, the Rousseaus, Millet and their colleagues. Not only did they paint; they also wrote poetry- and matched their skill against the handiwork of the medieval craftsmen. "So with Prescott Chaplin. A true artist, he also writes. He has invented a puppet of his own construction. He designs stage sets. He concerns himself with the type, paper and leather of the bookbinders craft. Vintage publicity photograph of W.C. Fields and Gloria Jean from the 1941 film. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Told as a "real life" film starring Fields as himself, "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" is an off-beat and slightly bizarre spoof on the Hollywood and filmmaking industry of Fields' time. The film doesn't quite follow a storyline, and is instead intentionally riddled with inconsistencies, forgotten characters, and wacky plot holes. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.…
