Zustand: New. Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine cloth, with dust jacket. Photographs by Chan Chao. Preface by Jeffrey Hoone. Afterword by Amitav Ghosh. 128 pp. with 77 four-color plates. 13-1/4 x 9-3/4 inches. This first edition was limited to 1000 hardbound copies. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From the text by Jeffrey Hoone: "Chan Chao's family left Burma for the United States when he was 12 years old. Eighteen years later Chao returned to Burma with the intention of rediscovering and reconnecting with the culture and people he had left years before. Twice denied a visa by the Burmese government, Chao eventually made his way to the Thai-Burmese border where students had established several camps to launch guerrilla attacks against the military regime that controlled Burma with the goal of restoring democracy to the country. With the knowledge that Burma's military junta is one of the world's worst human rights violators, Chao's portraits are remarkable for the sense of calm and tenderness that he draws out of each of his subjects. Each portrait is made from an intimate distance, generously placing each subject in the center of the frame surrounded by the soft focus of the lush jungle beyond. In many of his portraits the subjects hold simple objects: a sickle, a saw, a large piece of fruit, a live chicken. These simple objects provide an elegant solution to the problem of portraiture where individuals are often unsure of what to do with their hands, and in that uncertainty convey stiff and formal poses. But the objects are also disarming because they signal the activities of a simple agrarian life, not one of armed resistance. This contradiction plays heavily into the power that each image conveys, because each person that Chao photographs displays a remarkable range of honesty and emotion that seems to long for a return to the simple pleasures of family, work, and relaxation --not another night of firing rockets or setting land mines." Chan Chao was featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 500 copies hand-numbered and signed by Chao, with two original Type-C prints mounted recto and verso on a hinged board (each 4-1/8 x 3-1/4 inches). Hardcover. Paper-covered boards, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Chan Chao. 16 pp. with 1 four-color plate. 7-1/2 x 5-3/4 inches. New. The fifth publication in the Nazraeli Press One Picture Book series. From the text: "Hallo! Dear Naing Naing, I am so sorry for not writing you earlier. Do you remember Myint Zaw, General Secretary of D.A.B.? He died in March by sickness. All the place you had been with us in Hteekabalae are fallen into enemy's hand. I was in the area when the enemy approached. I sent my men to the front and have to leave quickly. I was told by my men to leave they don't let me know because they didn't want me to worry." From the publisher : "Chan Chao's first book, Burma: Something Went Wrong (Nazraeli Press, 2000), showed us a region in constant turmoil, whose people have been at war with themselves for generations, where violence and death, nevertheless, provide a backdrop to what is still a golden land. Letter from P.L.F. (Burma) pays respect to two of the guerilla fighters so gently portrayed by Chao: Myint Zaw and Aye Saung. The book is built around a single letter of correspondence sent to Chao in 1997 by Aye Saung. The brief letter relays news of a friend's death, a fighter's struggle, and a movement's dreams and setbacks. While the letter and accompanying portraits are specific to Burma in 1997, the themes found in Letter from P.L.F. are universal, making this an artists' book of the highest order." Signed by Author.
