Text in both English and French, with the original French text on the lower half of each page (translation by Alfred Wills). 218 x 145 mm. Canon Rendu, afterwards Bishop of Annecy, was the first to describe the ductility of glacier ice which enables it to plastically mold to its surroundings in spite of its brittle character. The publication of this volume was prompted by the controversy between John Tyndall and James Forbes. Tyndall had accused Forbes of failing fully to acknowledge the achievements of Rendu's theory of glaciers, and in the present work George Forbes attempted to defend his father (d. 1868) by offering a full record of the debate. To this end, Forbes junior reprinted articles by Tait and Ruskin on the controversy, and was aided in his translation of Rendu's work by Alfred Wills, James Forbes's dedicated disciple and sometime President of the Alpine Club. .
