This study of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP Yogam), one of the earliest social reform movements in Kerala, investigates the relationship between social reform, religion and caste. The Yogam drew inspiration from the ideas of Sree Narayana Guru, which suited the aspirations of the upwardly mobile Ezhava middle class. In both religious and social matters, the Guru was a traditionalist who adopted a rational stand and strove to create a modern outlook among the masses. He thought of the temple as a social space in which people could meet and exchange ideas. While pursuing his spiritual mission, he advocated education, industrialization and the abolition of caste as prerequisites for social regeneration. This work demonstrates how the SNDP Yogam focused on issues of education, government employment, industrialization, the abolition of cyclical rituals and caste, anti-alcoholism, and the demand for a new law of inheritance. Looking at the interface between the Guru's ideas and the Yogam's efforts in the direction of socio-economic reform and political democracy, one is able to discern the onset of modernity in Kerala. However, gradually, disjunction between principles and practice led to a decline of the SNDP movement. Ironically, since it was largely centered on the interests of the privileged sections of the Ezhava community, the movement achieved Ezhava solidarity only around caste. This study is also significant, therefore, for providing an example of a social reform movement turning into a caste solidarity movement. …

The work on Garuda is the only one of its type on a thematic delimitation. There are several books on the art of India in general that of South India or as for the matter Tamilnadu. Few books have a thematic delimitation e.g. Gopuras (J.C. Harle) and temple cars (Raju Kalidos). Several books on dynastic arts have come out of which the recent one on the Nayakas (R.K.K. Rajarajan) is noted. C. Sivaramamurti has brought out his magnum opus on Nataraja in Indian and South East Asian Art. The present work is on a minor deity Garuda. Though Garuda is one among the Amasavataras of Visnu he came to be elevated to a higher level in course of time. The book systematically traces the mythology of Garuda from puranic sources. An important dimension of the primary sources is that the Tamil ideas from various liturgical texts have been tapped. There is an exclusively chapter on the various literary works that go after Garuda such as Garudagayatri. However the most important contribution is the reflection of Gardua in the plastic and pictorial arts of the Indian subcontinent. The roots of Gardua in Indian art has been traced and its impression in early medieval art such of Calukya and Pallava examined. The high pitch of the Garuda cult is taken down to the Vijayanagara Nayaka art. Garuda occupies a status akin to Nandi. If Nandi is placed in an axial alignment with Siva/Linga Garuda is assigned the same status in Visnu temples. Besides he appears on the corners of various talas of the Vimanas and Gopuras in addition to walls of the temples in Tamilnadu.
