Hardcover. Zustand: New. Bhubaneswar is the capital of Odisha State from 1948 and now it has completed seventy-five years. As the capital of Greater Odisha from 1948 it has grown to be a famous urban centre in India. But the significance of Bhubneswar has to be considered from fix vast antiquities and in place in the cultural sp…ace in India. It was a celebrated religious site in India from the phase of the Nandas and Mauryas which can be known from the epigraphic records of the Maurya Ling Ashoka and Mahameghabahana Kharavela. The special Rock Edicts of Ashoka and the famous Hatigumpha inscription of the Jaina monarch Kharavela definitely indicate its considerable significance as a Buddhist and Jain centre in the early phase. Besides from the Gupta phase till the end of Suryavanshi Gajapati kingship Bhubaneswar was a centre where Kalinga school of art and architecture was in) a flourishing stage. Stupendous Salva structures like Mukteswar, Rajarani, Brahmeswar, Lingaraja, Megbewara and Ananta Vasudeva added to its architectural and sculptural glory and greatness. The famous Surabhagiri (which was later known At Dhauligiri) contained the rock edicts of Ashoka and as far as the version of Buddhist text Gandabyuha is considered it was a centre of medicinal herbs and plants and it looked very bright in the morning time for which in the 13 and 14 century A. D. it was called Swamadri in local texts like Ekamra Purana and Sarola Mahabharata. The term Swarnadri reminds us of the concept of El Dorado of the Portuguese which was well known in 16 century A. D. Bat Swarnadri (the golden Mountain) was well known in the 13 century A. D. Besides the centre for architectural and sculptural experiments on a grand scale for centuries it was a celebrated Saiva centre in India. The presiding deity Lingaraja is unique in India as we find only 12 Jyotirlingas in different religious centres in India, but Bhubaneswar was famous for Svayambhu Lingaraja which indicated kingly nature of Linga. Once upon a time as reported by William F. B. Laurie in his text entitled Orissa: The Garden of Superstition and Idolatry published in 1851 the centre of Lingaraja contained as many as 7000 temples. It was called the centre of Kruttivasa of Hemadri where as Kruttivasa's seat was in Himadri (Himalayas). Both Himadri and Hemadri need brilliant studies.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Preface. 1. Historical background. 2. Early career of Chodaganga. 3. Conquests of Chodaganga. 4. Extent of the empire and the location of the capital. 5. Administration. 6. Society. 7. Economic condition. 8. Religion. 9. Art and architecture. Conclusion. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. Plates.… In this book an attempt has been made to highlight the remarkable political career of Chodaganga and the socio-cultural milieu of his kingdom in Odisha. Chodaganga was probably a singular ruler of Odisha who held the reins of administration for long seventy years - at least fifty years of his active political career were unique in the history of Odisha. His reign constituted a glorious phase in the political and cultural history of early and medieval Odisha. He brought the political unification of the major portions of Odisha and erected the giant structure of an empire in South-Eastern India thus contributing to the formation of greater Ganga state. He was, therefore, to be compared with Mahameghavahana Kharavela who ruled Kalinga in the post-Maurya period and with Gajapati Kapilendra Deva who was the king of Odisha three hundred years after the end of his reign. The formation of a regional empire after a long military endeavour was the unique achievement of Chodaganga which lasted for more than three hundred years despite repeated Muslim onslaught from different parts of India. The glory of Chodaganga as a monarch thus rested on his superb statesmanship and his extra-ordinary military generalship which enabled him to be a mighty sovereign of a vast stretch of territory from the Ganges to Godavari. He was also the great builder of the famous Jagannatha temple in Puri which stands as a masterpiece of Kalinga art and architecture.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Aira Mahameghavahana Maharaja Kharavela was the greatest king of early Kalinga in the first century BCE. A singular but authentic report on this famous King of Kalinga, Kharavela was furnished by Hatigumpha (also called Hathigumpha) inscription in Udayagiri Hill of Bhubaneswar, the present capital of Odi…sha. It is in a mutilated form and so a clear photograph is not now available to the scholars. In 1916 KP.Jayaswal, famous Indian historian, approached His Honour, Sir Edward Gait, Lieutenant-Governor of Bihar and Orissa, to obtain an impression of the inscription for publication in the Journal of Bihar Orissa Research Society. His Honour had kindly arranged with the Archaeological Department to get the impression of the inscription. This impression was taken by R.D.Banerji in June 1917. A facsimile of the inscription was not available till 1917, though from 1825 the inscription by eye-copy and illustration of it by hand writing was utilised by the historians starting from Andrew Stirling. But from 1917 the Chiselled history of Kharavela came to light with the publication of Hatigumpha inscription by K.P.Jayaswal in the Journal of Bihar Orissa Research Society Several historians of India and abroad starting from Rajendralal Mitra, Bhagawanlal Indraji, J.F.Fleet, R.D.Banerji, K.P.Jayaswal, B.M.Barua, K.N.Mahapatra, N.K.Sahu and others have depended on this mutilated but tantalising record for the study of early Kalinga under Khäravela. Hence many rash theories were in circulation on this famous Kalinga King Khäravela on the basis of the record. Despite all defects in the facsimile of the Hatigumpha inscription it is the only source of our study and hence the picture we have on him is very often dim and incorrect leading to many constructions and speculations. But the subject of the inscription can be analysed properly with the support of some other archaeological findings and literary texts. The author of the inscription sometimes presented the names which he could pronounce in a corrupt form for which careless interpretation appears to gain popularity. In this respect we have to study the readings of the previous historians on this inscription carefully and should have scientific and correct interpretation only after discarding all imaginative and creative notes.

In this volume an attempt has been made to provide a connected account of the origin and development of the Kshetra of Purushottama Jagannatha and it is the outcome of my sustained researches on the cult of Jagannatha from 1980s to 2024. Some of the views were earlier published in Odia and English journals and they are now being used with sufficient revisions and elaborations. It is based on a reinterpretation of traditional narratives in literary and Puranic texts and epigraphic records. It describes the origin and development of Purushottama Kshetra on the seashore of Puri. It also presents an essay on the construction of a gigantic temple for Purushottama Jagannatha and the installation of the deities (in the form of Chaturddha Daru Murtti-Jagannatha, Balabahdra, Subhadra and Sudarshana) on the basis of an interpretation of epigraphic and literary narratives. Last but not the least it contains several other aspects like the repair and conservation of the temple, pilgrims, the nature of Madalapanji, the famous chronicle of Jagannath temple and the management of Jagannath temple in the colonial phase.
