Son caractère inédit par opposition à un genre plus classique comme la peinture d?histoire, a incité les académiciens à créer pour Watteau un genre spécifique, celui de la «fête galante». D?ailleurs, lors de son enregistrement par l?Académie, le titre de l??uvre, Pèlerinage à l?isle de Cythère a été biffé et remplacé par Une fête galante. Par la suite, le tableau de Watteau est désigné comme L?Embarquement pour Cythère jusqu?en 1961. Dans L'art du XVIIIe siècle. A poignant collection of letters and personal belongings relating to the World War I service of André Chéronnet-Champollion, the great-grandson of Jean Francois Champollion, the Egyptologist and decipherer of the Rosetta Stone, who was killed by a German sniper soon after arriving at the French Front in early 1915 and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Included are four letter written by Champollion's wife in the weeks immediately prior to his death; a letter from Lord Oxford, Raymond Asquith, apologizing that he cannot secure a translator position for Champollion; a dozen photographs of Champollion as a young man, images from the front and of his gravesite in France, which was used in a contemporary newspaper account of his death; as well as assorted possessions: a sash worn by Champollion, braided dress uniform cord, his initialed travel wallet, and an 1859 French edition of the Catechism with a gift Inscription by Jean Frangois Champollion's daughter Zoraïde to her son Rene, André father. Overall very good or better with folds and some toning on the letters and some wear on a few of the photographs and artifacts. André Champollion was born in France but came to America to be educated following the death of his mother, the granddaughter of railroad tycoon Austin Corbin. He attended Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, graduated from Harvard in 1898, and married Adelaide Knox in 1908 with whom he had a son. Upon the start of The Great War, Champollion felt obliged to answer the call of his homeland, despite being a relatively aged 34. Shortly after departing with his wife following her visit to France in early 1915, he was transferred to the front where he was killed on March 23, 1915 by a single shot while helping repair a trench damaged by a German mine. His time in France is detailed in *Letters from André Chéronnet-Champollion, 1914-1915*, a privately printed book published later that same years. The letters from his wife reveal a dedicated and loving relationships between the two, with fears about the outcome of Champollion's service: "I want you to write me the truth and that means every detail regardless of whether the life is better or worse than you expected. It doesn't pay for a husband and wife who love each other the way we do to hide mental suffering. If I know you are keeping things from me it will make me all the more miserable." Also detailed are her efforts to secure him a position as a translator away from the front: "The first thing this morning I went to the Embassy and had a good talk with Mr. Frazier. He is hopeful that his efforts to get you your appointment will be successful." Sadly the appointment never came. Along with the letters are seven photos from the French Front with most captioned on the back in French. Included are images of the French 39th Battery showing André in uniform with his fellow soldiers in front of a banner celebrating Christmas, as well as men standing by the entrance of the telephone post, a camouflaged cannon, men firing the cannon with billowing smoke, a man on horseback, and a few of no man's land from his trench. Also included is a graveside photograph showing a man standing by dozen makeshift graves, one of which is Champollion's in the Cemetery of Petain in the village of Watanville near Lorraine, France; this image was used to accompany an account of Champollion death in a contemporary Newport, New Hampshire newspaper. An interesting collection of material from an early casualty of World War I who paid the ultimately price of patriotism. A complete list is available upon request.…
