Framed. Zustand: Fine. Signed Photograph. Framed color photograph with museum glass, full piece measures 18" x 23." Dark cherry wood with silver trim. This piece is signed on the gray matte, below the photograph. Provenance: A gift from a flag officer to an employee at the Pentagon Office Building in Crystal City, VA, which closed during the 2011 Base Realignment and Closure. Inscription reads: "First US Space Flight - 5/5/61 - To The Crew Of Lake Champlain (CG 57) - Just One Of The Many 'Firsts' For A Great Name - Alan Shepard / Rear Admiral, USN (ret)." An exceptional association piece. On May 5, 1961, American astronaut Alan Shepard (1923-1998) became the first American to travel into space aboard the Freedom 7. His suborbital flight lasted only 15-minutes. His spacecraft was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain (CV-39). Upon his successful completion of the flight, Shepard was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal from President John F. Kennedy and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Shepard returned to space in 1971 aboard Apollo 14, becoming the 5th person to walk on the moon and oldest person to date. The USS Lake Champlain (CG-57) was commissioned in 1988 and remains in active service today. Inscribed by Alan Shepard, the first American to travel to space, to the crew of the USS Lake Champlain (CG-57), a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser. This ship's predecessor, the USS Lake Champlain (CV-39), recovered Shepard and the Freedom 7 (illustrator). Signed.…

Very good. Vertical discoloration at left and fold line visible at right. Size 23 x 20.5 Inches. A rare 1873 U.S. Coast Survey nautical map of Plattsburgh and Cumberland Bay, Lake Champlain, New York. This example is printed on thick paper, suggesting intended use on a ship. A Closer Look Coverage includes the city of Plattsburgh as well as surrounding areas as far south as Crab Island and as far north and east as Cumberland Head. The course of the Saranac River, the Whitehall and Plattsburgh Railroad, and the New York and Canada Railroad (consolidated with the former the same year) stand out prominently. Exceptional inland detail is included, with important buildings, streets, and property lines indicated. In Lake Champlain, there are countless depth soundings as well as notes on reefs, shoals, beacons and lighthouses, and the composition of bottoms. Publication History and Census This chart was produced by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1873. It is printed on heavy stock, intended for maritime use, rather than the more common thin, fragile paper used for charts in the annual Superintendent's Reports. An 1872 edition, unrecorded in institutional holdings, was previously sold by us. The present edition is only listed in the OCLC among the holdings of the Fenimore Art Museum and Yale University, with the latter being noted as derived from the Superintendent's Report.
