In den WarenkorbAn appealing collection of officer-quality sketches. The subject matter is fairly typical - views on the Nile, in Cairo, the Ibrahim Agha mosque, in and around Damietta, Mansoura and Talkha, and a sequence of smaller snapshots of types such as mat making, the forge, and the vegetable shop - but the treatment and technique are really quite unusual. The most successful of his images are quite loosely rendered with dashes of vivid colour to suggest the intensity of light. His studies of architecture effectively combine washes of colour with crisper detail to similar effect, and his handling of cloud formations in the landscapes are particularly well observed and engaging. Victor William Chamberlain-Andrews (1897-1982) was commissioned in 1917. He served as a lieutenant in the Hampshire and Leicestershire Regiments during World War I and fought at Cambrai. For a period in 1930 and 1940s, Chamberlain-Andrews was based in Egypt. Records show his wife and son visiting him in 1937 and his divorce there in 1949. At the time of his death, he was living in Fleet, Hampshire, recorded as a retired schoolmaster. Landscape quarto album (210 x 304 mm). With 34 tipped-in delicately rendered water colour sketches with pencil under-drawing of scenes in Egypt, various sizes between c.100 x 130 mm and c.240 x 160 mm. Decorative title page lettered as above in white ink, each image captioned in white ink, many initialled and dated. Original tissue-guards in place. Contemporary maroon morocco-textured paper boards, brown cloth backstrip, brownish pink marbled pastedowns. Album a little rubbed, the spine neatly restored, one empty leaf with section cut away, one leaf neatly removed, the sketches themselves in excellent condition, overall very good.
