Uniformly bound in the publisher's original maroon leatherette soft covers. Undated, dated from copies held by the National Library of Scotland. All copies are illustrated by the likes of Wilmot Lunt and J. E. Sutcliffe, including with a vignette title page and, excluding Castle Dangerous, with a frontispiece. With the exception of Waverley, which contains fourteen plates, all volumes also feature a further six plates. An exhaustive collection of twenty-three of the Collins illustrated pocket edition of the works of Sir Walter Scott. An eminent writer and historian, Scott remains a leading figure in Scottish history, best known for his "Waverly" novels and impressive narrative poems, such as Marmion and The Lady of the Lake. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original maroon leatherette soft covers. The Abbot features a colour postcard tipped in to page 266; The Betrothed features the frontispiece and first two pages of the John S. Brown and Sons Canadian edition of the Holy Bible, folded in two and heavily discoloured and spotted, tipped in to the front of the work; Peveril of the Peak contains an advertisement for the Glasgow-based wholesale musicseller Frank Simpson to page 210. Externally, lovely condition with only minor bumping and rubbing. Light fading along some of the spines, especially to Castle Dangerous and The Bride of Lammermoor. A few marks can be seen across the collection, more prominent to the rear of Rob Roy. Peak and Peveril features slightly heavier loss of cloth along the rear joint, reinforced with tape. Internally, firmly bound. The frontispiece and title page of The Antiquary and Woodstock remain unopened, as does page 386 to The Antiquary. Zustand: Near Fine. First edition hard back binding in original teal blue covers, small black and gilt title label to the beige spine, gilt lettering to the front cover. 8vo. 8½'' x 6''. Contains 118 printed pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Chamberlain and single-sided monochrome photographs. Off-setting to the end papers, spine very slightly age darkened and in very near Fine condition, acetate dust wrapper. A native of Minneapolis, Chamberlain joined the French Lafayette Flying Corps in June of 1917. He attended French school and was posted to Escadrille Spad 98. Slightly older than his squadron mates, he was often more reckless than the rest. During the German offensive in the spring of 1918, his squadron flew air superiority missions over the front lines and on 13 June, his group dove from 12,000 feet on some German aircraft. They had been lured into a trap and other German fighters attacked, Chamberlain was killed in his seat by an unlucky burst of machine gun fire from an enemy aircraft. Member of the P.B.F.A. First printing of Chamberlain, Segré, Wiegand and Ypsilantis landmark paper in which they first presented their discovery of antiprotons. Chambelain was together with Segré in 1959 awarded the Nobel prize in physics "for their discovery of the antiproton".The detection of the antiproton was first achieved in the fall of 1955 by the Berkeley physicists Owen Chamberlain [et al]. Their scintillators and Cerenkov counters showed about 60 antiproton condidates, but the ultimate proof of the particle, its annihilation with an ordinary proton, was not immediatedly confirmed. (Kragh, Quantum Generations). Since 1955, the antiparticles of many other subatomic particles have been created in particle accelerator experiments. In recent years, complete atoms ofantimatter have been assembled out of antiprotons and positrons, collected in electromagnetic traps. …
