The contents include the population of Glasgow , it's parishes and districts; Baptisms, Marriages and Burials; Progress of the Wealth, Poor Rates, Rental & c; Institution for Vaccinating the Children of the Poor Gratis etc; etc. James Cleland (1770 - 1840), statistician, and civic administrator. As a young man he was apprenticed as a cabinet maker in his father's business Glasgow. He developed into a very successful businessman and urban property developer. He was appointed became a civic officer in 1794 and became superintendent of public works in Glasgow,1814. In his early years he showed a flair for statistics, this manifested itself when he published a pamphlet in the 1790s with the title - ' Tables for Showing the Price of Packing - Boxes of Sundry Dimensions and Thicknesses,' this quickly became the standard work in the trade and underlined his interest and expertise in facts and figures etc. This talent led him to take the census of Glasgow in 1819, 1821 and 1831, and publish histories of Glasgow.
