[Descripción en español a continuación] This original antique lithograph portrays the matador Manuel Domínguez Campos, nicknamed "Desperdicios", and forms part of the series "Costumbres Andaluzas" made by the Cádiz-born draughtsman Antonio Chamán. The collection, printed at the establishment of Carlos Sa…ntigosa in Seville, constitutes a graphic document of 19th-century Andalusian society, integrating the world of the bull into the same cultural context that saw the birth of professional flamenco art. Manuel Domínguez, a fundamental figure of Seville's bullfighting, appears represented with the rigour characteristic of Chamán's drawings. The artist captures in detail the bullfighter's attire of the mid-19th century, highlighting the ornamentation of the jacket and the details of the traje de luces, elements that the author handled after his period in Málaga portraying popular types. This piece belongs to the section of the series that Chamán devoted to the protagonists of the national festival, thus completing the picture of Andalusian social reality for the Romantic mind. It is an original hand-watercoloured lithograph of the mid-19th century, in which Chamán's line is joined to the quality of Santigosa's lithographic stone. The work possesses biographical value with respect to the bullfighter represented, and functions as a record of the presence of the artists of the period, who, like the bolera dancers and the gypsy girls of Triana that Chamán also portrayed, raised popular customs to the category of professional art. La colección, impresa en el establecimiento de Carlos Santigosa en Sevilla, constituye un documento gráfico de la sociedad andaluza del siglo XIX, integrando el mundo del toro en el mismo contexto cultural que vio nacer el arte flamenco profesional. Manuel Domínguez, figura fundamental de la lidia sevillana, aparece representado con el rigor característico de los dibujos de Chamán. El artista captura con detalle la indumentaria torera de mediados del siglo XIX, resaltando la rica ornamentación de la chaquetilla y los detalles del traje de luces, elementos que el autor manejaba con maestría tras su etapa en Málaga retratando tipos populares. Esta pieza se integra en la sección de la serie que Chamán dedicó a los protagonistas de la fiesta nacional, completando así el cuadro de la realidad social andaluza para la mentalidad romántica. Chamán, who developed part of his career in Málaga capturing popular types and urban views, poured into thi…s collection printed by Carlos Santigosa in Seville a profound vision of Andalusian social reality through the prism of Romanticism. The series was conceived at a crucial moment for Spanish culture: the birth of flamenco dance in the Seville academies. It is the period of the "transcendental fusion" between the Andalusian bolero dances and the gypsy dances, where figures such as "La Campanera" or "El Tío Abejorro" shared the bill. Alongside the scenes of dance and popular trades -such as fritter-sellers or shearers-, Chamán included prints that completed the Romantic imagery of the period: portraits of bullfighters, horsemen and, as in this piece, quarrels and duels, which reflected the passionate and dramatic character attributed to 19th-century Andalusian society. In this original 1854 piece, Chamán's mastery in drawing is joined to the technical quality of Santigosa's lithography. The brawl scene stands out for its realism and tension, documenting not only the attire of the period but also the spaces of popular sociability -such as inns and taverns- that served as a setting both for dance and for conflict. It is a fundamental work for understanding the costumbrista iconography and the social context where flamenco art began to become professionalised. -------------------- Esta litografía antigua original forma parte de la serie "Costumbres Andaluzas", creada por el dibujante gaditano Antonio Chamán entre 1852 y 1854. Chamán, quien desarrolló parte de su carrera en Málaga capturando tipos populares y vistas urbanas, volcó en esta colección impresa por Carlos Santigosa en Sevilla una visión profunda de la realidad social andaluza bajo el prisma del Romanticismo. La serie se gesta en un momento crucial para la cultura española: el nacimiento del baile flamenco en las academias sevillanas. Es el periodo de la "fusión trascendental" entre los bailes boleros andaluces y los bailes gitanos, donde figuras como "La Campanera" o "El Tío Abejorro" compartían cartel. Junto a las escenas de baile y oficios populares -como buñoleras o esquiladores-, Chamán incluyó estampas que completaban el imaginario romántico de la época: retratos de toreros, caballistas y, como en esta pieza, pendencias y duelos, que reflejaban el carácter apasionado y dramático atribuido a la sociedad andaluza decimonónica. En esta pieza original de 1854, la maestría de Chamán en el dibujo se une a la calidad técnica de la litografía de Santigosa. La escena de la reyerta destaca por su realismo y tensión, documentando no solo la indumentaria de la época, sino también los espacios de sociabilidad popular -como ventas y tabernas- que servían de escenario tanto para el baile como para el conflicto. Colourful plates depicting Andalusian dress, dance, trades and customs. The illustrator Antonio Chamán, born in Cádiz, developed part of his care…er as an illustrator in Málaga, where he worked on lithographs reflecting popular types and views of the capital. He drew this series "Andalusian Customs" for the publisher Carlos Santigosa between 1852 and 1854.
