Apparently an unrecorded Charleston imprint. 4to. 29 pp. Fully engraved text and music. Siegling's enterprise was located at 109 meeting Street, 1828-1831, but the ownership signature seems to limit its publication date to one of the two earlier years. This Charleston printing seems to be unrecorded, not located in American impr…ints or on OCLC. OCLC does locate two Philadelphia, 1817, editions (4 copies total: Yale, Newberry, New York Public, defective Virginia example lacking title page) and another Philadelphia edition, circa 1824, in one copy (American Antiquarian Society). Ownership signature "Miss Eliza McMahan / Feby. 2d 1830" at the head of the title page; another early ownership signature "Eugenia Lee" at the head of the introduction leaf. Several ink corrections and additions to the text, large portion of lower corner of title page torn away (with the loss of "St." in the publisher's address), a good copy of a rare Charleston imprint, apparently unrecorded. Disbound from a sammelband of music related material. (10508). Duke holds a similar instructional work published by Siegling for "Spanish & English Guitar." The Siegling Music House was founded in Charleston by John Siegling (1791-1867), a native of Germany, in 1819 and operated by him and his descendants continuously until 1970. As a teenager, Siegling was apprenticed to a cabinet maker in Paris, turned his attention to musical instruments, and emigrated to the United States to practice his trade. In addition to selling his instruments and others imported from abroad or other states, his business published and sold sheet music and related musical instruction material and other music related goods. It was located at 69 Broad Street, 1819-1825, S.E. corner of Broad and King Streets, 1825-1828, 109 Meeting St., 1828-1831, and King St, corner of Beaufain from 1831 until the business closed in 1970, his descendants having taken over in 1858. The company's business records are held by the South Carolina Historical Society.
