A exposição foi pensada, desde a sua génese, como uma intervenção específica no espaço do Atelier-Museu, onde Júlio Pomar [Lisboa, 1926] e Rui Chafes [Lisboa, 1966] desenham recorrendo às qualidades dos traços negros, esboçados ora em linhas de carvão e grafite ora em linhas de ferro tridimensionais, assim investindo sobre uma ideia particular de «desenho» que toma corpo no espaço. Sendo a exposição pensada como um desenho que ocupa todo o Atelier-Museu, transformando-se o espaço do museu no suporte dessa disciplina, isso envolve questões disciplinares, nomeadamente a de pensar o desenho no campo da espacialidade, e a permeabilidade da obra pelo espectador, que nela penetra ao entrar no espaço. Very good and clean copy, one corner with a small bump. - Language: portugues and english. / Five years after the initial presentation in 2018, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Delegation in France, Rui Chafes and Alberto Giacometti are being exhibited together again at the Foundation's head office in Lisbon, united by the same words, Gris, Vide, Cris, in a larger, different space, and with additional works. -- The time that has elapsed between these two moments has allowed us to incorporate the history of this encounter that, in truth, has expanded, in time and in geography, beyond the limits previously envisaged. -- In 2018, in the institutional space of a Haussmannian' building, Rui Chafes used his own sculptures to receive Alberto Giacometti, allowing us a first view of the Swiss sculptor's works. In 2020, that gaze was symbolically returned in Stampa, Switzerland; Giacometti now welcomed, on his own familiar artistic turf, a powerful sculpture by Rui Chafes, Occhi che non dormono [Eyes that do not sleep], descended from La Nuit, which was presented in Paris and will always allude to the landscape in which Gia- cometti was born and worked. The exhibition presented in 2023 includes the images and memory of these two earlier events and allows us to add a space of reflection. -- Although aware of being in an entirely different museum space, with a specific architectural project and with new works, it is important to convey the essential aspects of that first experience that was simultaneously intellectual and physical. In 2018, Rui Chafes guided us along a path from which we could not exit indiffer- ently. The exhibition was entered through the inside of a sculpture (Au-delà des Yeux, from 2018), a space that opened into darkness, via an indecipherable and unpredictable route ill-suited to speed or hurry, instead demanding time for adaptation and revelation. "A clean gaze everything/ that won't die/ with us" - it was this poem by Joao Miguel Fernandes Jorge that crossed my mind, this afternoon, upon entering the first sculpture by Rui Chafes, which is called, precisely, "First Gaze". Through the several orifices in that conical structure, the trees and the sea are all we can see - everything that won't die? -, making it impossible to discern the buildings that throughout the decades have steadily disfigured the Caparica coastline. We may understand this sculpture as a prayer, between land and sea, ruling out the human stain that to varying degrees would later come to taint the landscape. Nevertheless, it has the unassuming appearance of a military sentry box, where for a few minutes or a lifetime we are allowed to play as the ephemeral toy soldiers that we truly are in this depleted land.
