The story of what happened when the Governor tried to shut down the Narragansett Race Track because of a political dispute with the owner. Finding these sorts of books and publications is always…fun. This rare pamphlet (only two copies found online) appeals to my book collector ethos, big time. But hey, I have been doing this for 50 years so its time to let someone else enjoy the thrill. Please find: "State House versus Pent HouseLegal Problems of the Rhode Island Race-Track Row," by Zechariah Chafee, Jr. This small-sized soft cover pamphlet (6 x 9 inches, 165 pages) was published as Dorr Pamphlet No. 1 by the Book Shop of Providence, Rhode Island, dated 1937. It is bound in light maroon paper stock with black titles on cover and spine. It includes 8 illustrations and a Map of the "Territory in Insurrection." Condition: This soft cover book (pamphlet) is in very good condition, especially considering that it is a soft cover, glued binding. There is some light soiling and a bit of fading to the covers but nothing extreme (please see the photos). Inside, there are some signs of a bookseller's pricing erased from the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages are clean and bright throughout. The binding is still tight and sound although a bit canted to the right. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

A lovely, tight first edition of this essay trilogy by three Harvard faculty, handsomely inscribed and signed large and bold in blue ink on the front flyleaf to "Miss Esther Dieter / with th…e compliments of / Norris T Hall / July 1934.". While Chafee and Hudson were law professors and discuss war from that perspective, Hall discusses the role of science in future wars -- aviation and dirigibles, water supplies, deadly gasses, etc. Hall (1891-1962) was an educator and chemist who was among the American servicemen assigned to Marie Curie's mobile x-ray unit in World War One; he taught not only at Harvard, but also at Stanford and the University of Wisconsin. Interesting and unusual.

Moderate toning to interior, brief manuscript corrections in ink to a few leaves. $500. * In 1949 Chafee, Langdell Professor of Law at Harvard and the nation's leading expert on the First Amendment, submitted this statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which was considering a two bills that were intended to revive the provisions of the Mundt-Nixon Bill. Named for Representatives Karl Mundt and Richard Nixon and initially known as the Subversive Activities Control Act, this House bill required all members of the Communist Party of the United States to register with the attorney general. Massive protests were held in Wahington, DC against the bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly; the Senate held committee hearings on the bill but failed to take a vote. In his statement, addressed to Committee Member James Eastland, Chafee famously challenges the "Clear and Present Danger" doctrine here, noting that "it is not enough that Communists are pestiferous people. the question is whether they are within a million miles of [taking over]." A vital primary source documenting the legal resistance to the McCarran Act era. Ultimately, neither bill passed the Senate.
