Édition originale composée par le marin et hydrographe toulonnais, Joseph-Bernard de Chabert (1724-1805) qui participa à la guerre d'Indépendance des États-Unis en tant que chef d'escadre. Le 1er avril 1748, il est nommé Enseigne de vaisseau , chargé par ordre du Roi d un voyage d études et de reconnaissances scientifiques dans l Amérique septentrionale qu il effectue de 1750 à 1751 sur la Mutine après deux années de préparation. Au cours de cette mission, il calcule la latitude et la longitude des positions caractéristiques et établit les relevés hydrographiques de toutes les côtes et îles parcourues, et teste un chronomètre de marine. La relation qu'il donne de son voyage en Amérique septentrionale, fut fortement recommandée a l'époque par la commission de l'Académie des Sciences qui invita les futurs explorateurs à la considérer comme travail de référence. Le Ministre de la marine en subventionna la publication et en réserva 200 exemplaires pour lui-même. On y trouve effectivement le relevé hydrographique de la cote Est le plus exact qui avait été fait jusqu'alors. 4° , full contempary calf , First edition composed by the sailor and hydrographer from Toulon, Joseph-Bernard de Chabert (1724-1805) who took part in the War of Independence of the United States as a squadron commander. On April 1, 1748, he was appointed Enseigne de vessel, charged by order of the King with a voyage of study and scientific reconnaissance in North America which he carried out from 1750 to 1751 on the Mutine after two years of preparation. During this mission, he calculates the latitude and longitude of the characteristic positions and determines the hydrographic readings of all the coasts and islands traveled, and tests a marine chronometer. The report he gives of his trip to North America was strongly recommended at the time by the commission of the Academy of Sciences, which invites future explorers to consider it as a reference work. The Minister of the Navy subsidizes its publication and reserves 200 copies for himself. There is actually the most accurate hydrographic survey of the east coast that had been done until then.

Deux compartiments du dos restaurés, avec légère atteinte au chiffre, restauration en queue ainsi qu'aux mors et aux coins. Jeune enseigne de vaisseau formé à l'astronomie sur ordre du ministre de la Marine, Joseph-Bernard de Chabert est chargé en 1750, à la demande de La Galissonière, alors responsable du Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine, de reprendre depuis Louisbourg les levés hydrographiques des côtes de l'Acadie, de l'Île Royale et des approches de Terre-Neuve, les cartes alors en usage se révélant insuffisamment exactes. Durant plus d'une année, malgré des conditions de navigation particulièrement difficiles, il parcourt les rivages jusqu'au cap Sable et à l'île de Sable, réalisant l'un des relevés hydrographiques les plus précis de son temps pour cette partie de l'Amérique du Nord. Ses travaux corrigent notamment de façon décisive la représentation de la Nouvelle-Écosse, dont il établit que la longueur avait été surestimée de quinze à vingt lieues sur les cartes antérieures. Publié en 1753 grâce au soutien du ministre de la Marine, qui se réserva deux cents exemplaires de l'ouvrage pour les besoins de son administration, le volume se divise en deux parties : le récit du voyage de Brest à Louisbourg et des quatre campagnes hydrographiques conduites sur les côtes voisines, puis l'exposé détaillé des observations astronomiques et des calculs ayant permis d'établir cette nouvelle cartographie. Jacques Cassini is most famous for extending the Paris meridian, a meridian line running through the Paris Observatory in Paris?now longitude 2°20?14.02500? East. It was a long-standing rival to the Greenwich meridian as the prime meridian of the world.Admitted at the age of seventeen to membership of the French Academy of Sciences, in 1696 Cassini was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London (the UK?s national academy of sciences). In 1718, Cassini extended the Paris meridian, measuring the arc of the meridian from Dunkirk to Perpignan, succeeding in this feat some 130 years before George Airy calculated the Greenwich meridian in 1851. Cassini presented this work in the Histoire de l?Academie des Sciences, and in 1722 he published his results in the important work De la Grandeur et de la Figure de la Terre included in the present volume, ?in which he confirmed his support for the hypothesis of the elongation of the terrestrial ellipsoid and opposed that of its flattening, which was defended by the supporters of Newton and Huygens" (DSB). In 1884, the International Meridian Conference in Washington D.C. adopted the Greenwich meridian as the prime meridian of the world, although the French continued to use the Paris meridian until the early twentieth century.Joseph-Bernard de Chabert-Cogolin (1724?1805) was a French naval officer, geographer, and astronomer, most noted for his contributions in correcting naval charts of America?s western coast and the coasts of the Mediterranean. Following family tradition, de Chabert-Cogolin joined the navy as a midshipman in 1741, ?where he displayed an interest in science and a talent for drawing charts that brought him to the attention of the minister of Marine.? de Chabert-Cogolin gained experience in conducting surveys and geographical observations that helped improve and correct navigational charts. ?In June 1751 he departed for Cape Sable at the southern extremity of Nova Scotia to determine its latitude and longitude and then coasted along the shore. At the conclusion of his survey, he discovered the length of Nova Scotia to be about 15 to 20 leagues shorter than was shown on contemporary charts. The following month he successfully located Sable Island, and in August he chartered the southern coast of Newfoundland from Cape Ray to Cape Race.? The work was highly praised by the examining commission of the French Academy of Sciences, it was recommended as a navigational model for future navigators. The first part of the work contains the author's voyage from Brest to Louisburg, and…4 expeditions, the second part describes his astronomical observations at large. It is especially Chabert's astronomical research, which was very precise even by today's standards, that give his work great scientific value. Chabert added 6 maps to the first part, all of them with astonishingly exact data, also making the book interesting with respect to Canadian geography. Chabert joined the navy on July 14, 1741, on the ship Léopard. He navigated the American coast, where he still was in 1746 on another ship, the Émeraude. After a promotion in 1748, he was ordered by the king to visit the region which now forms the south-east part of Quebec, east Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, the voyage which he describes in the present work. A few years after Chabert's visit in 1750-51, the French Indian War broke out in 1754, and three-quarters of the remaining population of 10.000 French settlers, who were considered to be a threat to the British position, were forcibly resettled in other parts of North America. He was received in 1753 as a member of the navy academy in Brest, and later those of Bologne, Berlin and Nancy. Very good copy.l Henze I, 536; Lande 114; Leclerc 691; Sabin 11723.
