Condition of all material is Very Good or better. Celebrated annually now for over 100 years, "The Ceremonial" is an inter-tribal Native American and Indigenous festival held in and around Red Rock Park near Gallup, New Mexico. It is one of the City of Gallup's and State of New Mexico's oldest cultural events. The first Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial was held in Gallup, New Mexico on September 28, 1922. According to the 1950 brochure, present in this lot, "It was not a large event, nor were adequate facilities available. Exhibits were put in tents; automobiles provided seats for the spectators and their lights illuminated the evening programs." The ephemera offered in this lot thoroughly documents the activities of the inter-tribal ceremonial festival from a decade or so after its inception to more recent times (from the 1930s to 2017), including the street parades, the musical and dance performances, the rodeos; and depicts the various arts, crafts, and ceremonial costumes and dresses of the many participating indigenous tribes. The lot also shows a diverse and evolving portrait of the town of Gallup, New Mexico and its surrounding areas, as well as its everyday people and visitorscoming, going and observing the festivities. An exceptional collection of ephemera highlighting a Mew Mexican cultural institution. "The Ceremonial features Native American and Indigenous diverse intertribal culture and art in both traditional and contemporary presentations. Throughout its century old legacy and evolution, The Ceremonial has had many caretakers and its resilience is a result of the dedication and support of the City of Gallup, Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Association, Inc., McKinley County, State of New Mexico Tourism Department, Intertribal Ceremonial Office and generations of community 'Ceremonial' supporters who volunteer their time and expertise. Additionally, thousands of Native American and Indigenous participants, some generational, have shared songs, dances, art, and culture that demonstrate the fortitude of the Native American Tribes in New Mexico and beyond. The event is held annually in August at the Red Rock Park which is located 10 minutes east of downtown Gallup, New Mexico - USA" (www.gallupintertribalceremonial.com/about).

The "Papal Ceremonialregulates the observance of the papal court, the elevation and coronation of the pope and the imperial coronation" (New Grove2). It prescribes the movements, gestures, actions, ornaments and vestments of the officiants. This most elaborate and complex part of the liturgy remained unaffected by the sweeping changes introduced by the Council of Trent. In addition to codifying public ecclesiastical ritual, the text provides templates for, i.a., papal travel, church lighting and the reception of foreign and domestic dignitaries. This is Dorico's only liturgical printing. This copy is among those bound for Pius V to be distributed to his intimates. Appointed Segretario dei Memoriali by Pius V in 1566, Fiorenzi examined and presented to the pope all petitions from his subjects and replied to each as the pontiff directed. In 1570, Pius V raised Fiorenzi to conte of Montecerno, and, in 1588, he became Bishop of Osimo. The early manuscript notes in the margins of a dozen leaves focus on the role of the cardinal serving as the lead Bishop-Assistant (cardinalis assistens) to the Papal Throne. In good condition (six sorts touched by worming, a dozen blank outer margins damaged by an ink spill). Barberi, "I Dorici, tipografi a Roma" in Tipografi romani del '500 143; Macchi & Macchi, Atlante della legatura italiana. Il Rinascimento 60-1; EDIT16 CNCE 11958. CONTEMPORARY BROWN MOROCCO DECORATED BY THE RUIZ BINDER with a stylish gilt interlacing strapwork frame and central lozenge, in the middle THE GILT AND PAINTED ARMS OF POPE PIUS V on the front panel and on the rear THOSE OF HIS SECRETARY OF MEMORIALS, TEODOSIO FIORENZI, a gilt fleuron in each spine compartment (minor neat repairs), evidence of eight red textile ties, all edges gilt.

Handmade manuscript book with black and white hand-drawn illustrations, 28 x 18cm, 25 double-folded leaves, four hole string binding, title label upper cover. A little marginal browning and soiling consistent with use, upper corners bumped, lacks decorative paper over lower wrapper. This manuscript is a copy of Kojitsu kenp? (????), a work concerned with menu composition and the presentation of food for celebratory occasions tied to seasonal festivals, including the New Year in January and the Girls? Festival in March. The text is organised into seven sections comprising a total of one hundred items. This copy was most likely produced in the late Edo period. A note on the final page states that the contents are secret and should not be transmitted to outsiders, suggesting its use within a restricted or specialist context. Several hand-drawn illustrations are included with the text, showing in detail the arrangement and presentation of dishes and serving ware appropriate to these ceremonial occasions.

This pair of Taoist deities painted on paper laid on card appear to be Yao (Mien) Taoist ceremonial paintings, possibly portable altarpieces, 26 x 14cm. Painted predominantly in red, green, blue and yellow in the decorative style of Yao ceremonial paintings. Paper browned, 2cm scorch mark with small hole on image of Lingyu Tianzun, small chips on image of Yuhuang Shangdi, chipped at edges but main images clear and in bright colours. Such Taoist deities would usually be painted on scrolls for use in large sets, but these smaller items were possibly meant for placement on an altar in a small room. The style of painting is akin to that used in Yao ceremonial scroll paintings.
