Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Second. Second edition. Amsterdam: Gerard Valk & Peter Schenk, 1708. Folio (20 1/8" x 12 1/2", 511mm x 318mm). 3 text-leaves (title, blank, contents, blank; duplicate title, blank), engraved title-page (Frederik Hendrik van den Hoven) and 29 double-page engraved plates, all of which with hand-color by a contemporary hand. Bound in contemporary sheep panelled in blind (re-backed). All edges of the text-block speckled red. Re-backed, with some strengthening to the fore-corners. Duplicate letter-press title-page with a repaired loss to the upper edge. Plates numbered in ink manuscript verso. With pigment oxidation to the verso of the plates, consistent with original coloration. A very good copy indeed, with fine color. Andreas Cellarius (or Keller, ca. 1596-1665) was born in Germany and worked principally in Holland. From 1637 he was rector of the Latin school in Hoorn, North Holland's third city (after Amsterdam and Haarlem). Apart from this, little is known except for his production of the revolutionary Harmonia macrocosmica in 1660. The XVIIc was a time of revolution in the field of astronomy; Copernicus's heliocentricity of the XVIc released science from the shackles of Aristotle, paving the way for Brahe, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Cellarius made visible those great strides, integrating ancient astronomy and mythology and forming the armature of modern astronomical illustration. By 1708 -- the publication date of this second edition, with the only change being the addition of Valk's and Schenk's names to the engraved title-page -- the world of astronomy had progressed considerably. Newton's publications came to reshape and to dominate the field (along with several others) from the 1680's, and yet Cellarius's visualizations and aestheticization of the cosmos held then as they do now an appeal that has never been surpassed. Decorated along the edges with angels, astronomers, and astronomical instruments, Cellarius' atlas is one of the most spectacular works in the history of astronomy. This reprint of the hand-colored and complete edition from the University Library of Amsterdam contains an illustrated introduction by Robert van Gent, one of the most prominent Cellarius scholars, who summarizes the history of celestial cartography from antiquity to the end of the 17th/beginning of the 18th century and describes the life and work of Andreas Cellarius. Van Gent also discusses the historical and cultural context, the significance of the atlas, and provides detailed descriptions of the maps. …

An 18th-century map of northern Africa by Andreas Cellarius, including the Sahara desert and the mythical Mountains of the Moon. The Dutch-German cartographer and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (c.1596-1665) had, by 1625, moved to Amsterdam to become a schoolmaster, and from 1637 was headmaster of the local Latin school in Hoorn. During his time there he published several works, of which the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) is his best known, and considered one of the most beautiful examples of a celestial atlas. The present map originally comes from Cellarius's Geographia Antiqua iuxta et nova, a smaller comparative geography. It was adapted by an English schoolmaster Samuel Patrick (1684-1748) into a map-rich English-language edition under the title Geographia antiqua (first published 1731), which was popular enough to be reproduced multiple times during the 18th and 19th centuries. It included small-scale maps of the two hemispheres and twenty-four maps of the regions of the ancient world. This example comes from an edition published in 1794. Original copper engraving (31 x 21 cm), hand coloured. In very good condition.…

Original antique copper engraving, beautiful hand colored in outline and wash when published and heightened in gold. Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660). Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596, Neuhausen, 1665, Hoorn) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. He was born in Neuhausen (now a part of Worms), and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty Years' War in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoorn. From 1637 until his death he was rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, where Pieter Anthoniszoon Overtwater was conrector. He published on fortification and on Poland. The minor planet 12618 Cellarius is named in his honour.(Wikipedia)An old mended split at the lower centre-fold skillfully restored. The upper margin of the plate was cut within the plate. Here old paper was carefully added and the outer engraved borderline of the map carefully redrawn. Overall a beautiful example preserved in original colors in very good to excellent condition.
