Destouches» adressée au journaliste Léon Deffoux qui consacra plusieurs articles à l'uvre de Céline. 24 lignes rédigées à l'encre noire, plusieurs soulignements et ratures de la main de Céline. Enve…loppe antérieure tamponnée du 25 février 1933 jointe. Pliures inhérentes à la mise sous pli du courrier ainsi que quelques très infimes trou d'épingles en marge haute droite du feuillet. Intéressante lettre dans laquelle Céline communique à son correspondant la liste du jury du prix Blumenthal, bourse distribuée depuis 1920 au profit de jeunes artistes talentueux. Céline y brosse un portrait de son«candidat»et«amiHenri Mahé», rencontré quelques années plus tôt :«25 ans réformé pour baullose(?) actuellement en traitement à Camaret Finistère. Sans fortune il travaille entre les périodes de dépression. Il est marié. Fort généreux et désintéressé de nature. Un excellent artiste à tous égards parfaitement recommandable. Ni arriviste, ni bluffeur.» Céline dresse ensuite un inventaire des ses travaux les plus emblématiques avant de conclure: «Tout ceci, fresques amples, dans le style Gauguin-Lautrec.» C'est à l'automne 1929 que Céline fait la connaissance d'Henri Mahé qui vit alors sur une péniche, la Malamoa, sur laquelle il reçoit une ribambelle d'amis chaque semaine. Le jeune peintre, de treize ans le cadet de Céline, connaît déjà à cette époque un franc succès. Fantaisiste, Mahé se spécialise dans la décoration des lieux de plaisir parisiens: maisons closes, boîtes de nuit et autres cabarets. «Au printemps 1933, son complice Henri Mahé, libéré par une réforme de ses obligations militaires, a abandonné sa péniche et quitté la région parisienne pour la Bretagne, plus précisément Camaret, où il fait construire un voilier l'Enez Glaz (l'Île bleue). De Paris, Céline s'emploie pour lui trouver des ressources, d'abord en le ventant auprès d'Abel Gance qui peut lui procurer des commandes de décor, puis en le recommandant auprès de plusieurs membres de l'entourage de Lucien Descaves, en vue d'un prix Blumenthal de décoration que Mahé obtiendra en effet en juillet 1934, et auprès de Denoël - qui déclinera - pour une édition illustrée du Voyage.» (Henri Godard, Céline) "Je viens de recevoir la visite ici d'un admirable ami et admirable peintre, Henri Mahé,français, breton et parisien.
