James Anthony Froude FRSE (/fru?d/ FROOD; 23 April 1818 - 20 October 1894) was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amid…st the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. Inspired by Thomas Carlyle, Froude's historical writings were often fiercely polemical, earning him a number of outspoken opponents. Froude continued to be controversial up until his death for his Life of Carlyle, which he published along with personal writings of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle. These publications illuminated Carlyle's often selfish personality, and led to persistent gossip and discussion of the couple's marital problems.

Russell Gurney, FRS (2 September 1804 - 31 May 1878) was an English lawyer and Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1865 to 1878. Gurney…was born at Norwood, the son of Sir John Gurney, a Baron of the Exchequer and his wife Maria Hawes daughter of William Hawes MD. He was educated at Dunham Norfolk under Mr Jowett and at Trinity College, Cambridge and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple, of which became a bencher in November 1828.In 1845 he was made a Queen's Counsel and in 1856 was elected Recorder of London. He occasionally acted as Judge of Assize, and went the Western, Oxford, Northern, and North Wales circuits. He was a Commissioner of the Jamaica Rebellion inquiry and was sworn a member of the Privy Council in 1866, in recognition of his services. He was one of the Boundary Commissioners appointed by the Representation of the People Act 1867. He was chairman of the Law Reversionary Interest Society, deputy chairman of the Law Fire Insurance Co., and a director of the Law Life Assurance Co.

Granville Augustus William Waldegrave, 3rd Baron Radstock (10 April 1833, London - 8 December 1913, Paris) was a British missionary and a Peer of Ireland.He became the 3rd Baron R…adstock on the death of his father Granville George Waldegrave in 1857. Radstock married Susan Calcraft (1833-1892) on 16 July 1858 in Trinity Church, Marylebone. She was the youngest daughter of John Hales Calcraft, MP for Wareham, and Lady Caroline Montagu, daughter of William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester. In 1889, they acquired the Mayfield estate in Weston, Southampton.Radstock is perhaps best known for his work as a missionary during the Great Russian Awakening. In 1874, he traveled to St Petersburg as part of his missionary work, trips that were repeated in 1875-6 and 1878.

William Lennox Bathurst, 5th Earl Bathurst (14 February 1791 - 24 February 1878), styled The Honourable William Bathurst from 1794 to 1866, was a British peer, To…ry Member of Parliament and civil servant.Bathurst was the second son of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst, and his wife Lady Georgina (née Lennox). He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a Master of Arts in 1812. The same year, aged twenty-one, he was elected to the House of Commons as one of two representatives for Weobley (succeeding his elder brother Lord Apsley), a seat he held until 1816. He then returned to Christ Church and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1817. In 1821 he was called to the Bar, Lincoln's Inn. Bathurst was a Deputy Teller of the Exchequer between 1816 and 1830 and a Commissioner for victualling the Royal Navy between 1825 and 1829 and served as Joint Secretary to the Board of Trade from 1830 to 1847 and as Joint Clerk of the Privy Council from 1830 to 1860. In 1866, aged seventy-five, he succeeded his elder brother in the earldom and entered the House of Lords.Lord Bathurst died in February 1878, aged eighty-seven. He never married and was succeeded in his titles by his nephew Allen.

Sir Colman Michael O'Loghlen, 2nd Baronet (pronounced and sometimes spelt O'Lochlen) (20 September 1819 - 22 July 1877) was an Irish baronet and politician.O'Loghlen was born in…County Clare, Ireland, eldest son of the distinguished Irish judge Sir Michael O'Loghlen, 1st Baronet and his wife Bidelia Kelly.He was educated by the Jesuits at Clongowes Wood College, Co Kildare. He attended from 1831-1833.He succeeded to his father's baronetcy in 1842 on the death of his father, and in 1863 he was elected to the British House of Commons for County Clare. He held the seat until his death in 1877, aged 57. He had no son and the title passed to his brother Bryan, Premier of Victoria.O'Longhlen held the office of Judge Advocate General, from 1868 until 1870. At the time this was a political office.He was elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1856.

John Tyndall FRS (2 August 1820 - 4 December 1893) was a prominent 19th-century physicist. His initial scientific fame arose in the 1850…s from his study of diamagnetism. Later he made discoveries in the realms of infrared radiation and the physical properties of air. Tyndall also published more than a dozen science books which brought state-of-the-art 19th century experimental physics to a wide audience. From 1853 to 1887 he was professor of physics at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London.
