Raeburn's notoriety was such that he served as portrait painter to King George IV. The text volume contains several in-text reproductions of the artist's work, as well as a detailed biographical and descriptive catalogue by John L. Caw. Its companion volume is a striking portfolio of 66 plates printed on India paper. The mounts for the plates measure 15 x 11.4" (38cm x 29cm); the printed images themselves vary in size, but are typically about 7.5 x 6" (19cm by 15cm). Each of the 66 plates is tissue-guarded. Binding and portfolio are both partly rubbed along edges. Closed tear at upper back joint of portfolio. Binding and portfolio in overall good- to good, interior in very good condition.
