6th Duke of Devonshire, Bibliophile and collector of coins (1790-1858). 2 & 3 pp., 8vo, letters stuck together, signs of laying down, the first is missing a section with loss of text, second is complete. In the first, he apologises for not waiting on Mrs Keatinge in Ireland, but anticipates seeing them in England. In the second, he describes the "raptures" experienced by himself and (Joseph) Paxton to have received another specimen of an obviously rare and beautiful plant from her (presumably Mrs Keatinge), looking forward to seeing her and Mrs de Salis, and providing a letter which would enable them to view "all things in perfection" should he be absent. First appearance of Franklin's report on affixing electrical conductors to five gunpowder magazines, a safeguard against the blowing up of a magazine by lightning. When the Purlfeet magazines were struck by lightning in 1777, the powder did not explode, and the buildings escaped serious damage (Weld, History of the Royal Society, 97).…
