Paperback. Zustand: Very good. Paperback. 64pp. Edges darkened, light crease to rear, else very good in publisher's stapled wraps. Edith Louisa Cavell was a British nurse who became known for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination during the First World War and for helping approximately 200 Allied soldiers escape German-occupied Belgium through the resistance network La Dame Blanche. Arrested by German authorities, Cavell was court-martialed under German military law for violating medical neutrality and sentenced to death by firing squad. Despite international appeals for clemency, General Traugott von Sauberzweig, military governor of Brussels, refused to commute her sentence. On the eve of her execution, Cavell reportedly said, "Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone." She was executed the following morning, at age 49, in the presence of Imperial German Army medic and poet Gottfried Benn. Cavell was already recognized as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. BERT, George; BRITTON, Charles; and WRIGHT, Lawrence. She Was an Angel of Mercy. A Tribute to the Memory of Nurse Cavell. Song and Recitation. London: The Lawrence Wright Music Co., 1915. Original pictorial sheet music, 4 pp., with photographic portrait of Edith Cavell to the front wrapper, words by George Bert and Charles Britton, music by Lawrence Wright, and a recitation following the song. A worn but complete copy. Toning and handling wear throughout, with staining and marking, creasing, numerous short tears and chips to the edges, including areas of loss, and splitting and small losses along the central fold. Further closed tears and weakness to the paper, particularly towards the lower margins and corners. The printing and text remain substantially unaffected and entirely legible. Good condition only, but a scarce survival of an ephemeral First World War publication. A contemporary musical tribute to the British nurse Edith Cavell (1865-1915), published in the immediate aftermath of her execution by German firing squad in occupied Brussels on 12 October 1915. Cavell had helped Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and rapidly became one of the most celebrated British martyrs of the First World War. The song describes her as "one of the Red Cross Band" and urges that "the mem'ry must not die", while the accompanying recitation explicitly presents Cavell as a martyr whose name would live on. The front wrapper states that the publishers were devoting half the profits from the first 10,000 copies sold to the Cavell Memorial Fund. Copyright dated MCMXV. An uncommon piece of contemporary Cavell and First World War ephemera: I can trace a copy in the British Library, but no copies currently offered in commerce.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. CAVELL, Edith. - [Memorial napkin: Nurse Edith Cavell, "The Florence Nightingale of Brussels"] . Wigan: Palatine Press, [1915]. Square crepe paper napkin, 375 × 375 mm, printed on one side in red, blue, gold, and black, incorporating a half-tone reproduction of the familiar Daily Mirror portrait of Cavell with her dogs, framed by Union flags and memorial text. Old folds and light foxing to edges but well preserved for such a fragile production. A very good example. Issued within weeks of Edith Cavell's execution by firing squad on 12 October 1915, this ephemeral napkin was part of the rapid memorialisation of Cavell as a patriotic martyr. A nurse and Red Cross VAD based in Brussels, Cavell was arrested for aiding Allied soldiers to escape occupied Belgium and was prosecuted by a German military court. Her death provoked international outrage and gave rise to a wide range of memorial souvenirs, sermons, and broadsides. The text printed here is an example of the rhetoric that transformed Cavell into a symbol of national sacrifice, employing religious and sentimental imagery: "Our English Edith was made of steel and lilies … 'I am happy to die for my country'. Those words will be inscribed in stars across eternal skies so long as English womanhood is a living thing." A scarce survival: ephemeral by nature, these napkins were rarely preserved. Only one other noted in commerce, and none currently traced in institutional holdings.…

Rare surviving copy of this fragile memorial napkin commemorating the life of Edith Cavell (1865-1915). Using evocative language, the napkin tells the story of Cavell, her role in the war, and her death at the hands of a German firing squad on 12 October 1915. Cavell was a British nurse working in German-occupied Belgium at a Red Cross hospital which treated casualties from both sides, as well as civilians. From September 1914, she became part of a network that sheltered Allied soldiers and Belgians eligible for military service, arranging their escape. Over the next 11 months she helped around 200 British, French, and Belgian soldiers to leave the country. Initial shock at Cavell's death was quickly succeeded by international protest, and she became, almost overnight, a heroine and martyr. She was used as a symbol of the Allied cause and her memory was invoked in recruitment posters and propaganda such as this napkin. Cavell's memory was also immortalized in statues. The most famous, by Sir George Frampton, was commissioned in 1915 and erected in the early 1920. Situated in London in St Martin's Place, it is inscribed with the words "Patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone", part of her final message from prison. We have traced no copies of this napkin listed on WorldCat. Square crepe paper napkin (355 x 355 mm). Frame-mounted in archival board (477 x 480 mm.) Printed on one side in black, red, blue, and gold, large central photograph. Old folding creases, a few small edge chips, paper flaw to left-hand side, overall well preserved.…
