Vintage oversize borderless double weight photograph of Charles Aznavour and Michele Mercier from the 1960 film. With manuscript annotations on the verso. Aznavour spends half his time playing saloon piano and half his time on the run in this early Truffaut masterpiece, one of the great French noirs, based on the 1956 hard-boiled novel "Down There" by American pulp author David Goodis. Criterion notes: "François Truffaut is drunk on the possibilities of cinema in this, his most playful film. Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy, Shoot the Piano Player relates the adventures of mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns, clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American gangster film is pure nouvelle vague." 11.5 x 9 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection. Grant France.

During World War I, Henri Landru (Charles Denner) supplements his income by luring middle-class women through newspaper ads, to a villa outside Paris where he seduces and kills them, burns their bodies, then helps himself to their bank accounts, keeping himself, his wife, his mistress, and his four children in the lifestyle to which they are accustomed. Shot on location in Paris and Gambais, France. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus. Light creasing in margins, three with pinholes to corners, one with notable creasing in left margin. Grant France.

Vintage borderless reference photograph of director Agnes Varda on the set of the 1962 French film. With a stamp noting Varda's name on the verso, along with manuscript pencil and ink annotations. Agnes Varda's second feature film, following a pop singer over the course of two hours as she talks with friends and anxiously awaits the results of a biopsy. Varda is an important and influential French director, writer, and artist whose work uses both documentary style realism and experimental film techniques to explore issues of feminism and social justice. A colleague of Alain Resnais and other Rive Gauche filmmakers, her early work, including this film, stylistically prefigures the French New Wave, and is today considered very much a part of it. Set and shot on location in Paris. 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Near Fine.

Fotografie
Vintage borderless black-and-white double weight photograph from the set of the 1968 French film noir. With a rubber stamped date of March 12, 1970 on the verso, along with numerous press annotations and markings. A wonderful candid shot of Truffaut, Jade, and Léaud sitting on a park bench during principal shooting of the film. Raymond Cauchetier began his career as a set photographer in 1956, on Marcel Camus' 1957 film, "Fugitive in Saigon." Cauchetier's film career is closely linked to the French New Wave, for whose founders he became a favorite still photographer. Between "Breathless" in 1960, and "Stolen Kisses in 1968 (his final film), Cauchetier worked with most of the emblematic directors of that movement, including Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Demy, Agnes Varda, and Jacques Rozier. He was honored with a monograph "Photos de cinema: Autour de la Nouvelle Vague (1958-1968)" (Image France Editions, 2007), in which several of his most evocative images can be seen. The third of Truffaut's series of five films wherein Léaud portrays Truffaut's semi-autobiographical character Antoine Doinel. 9.75 x 8 inches. Some impressions visible on the recto from the press annotations on the verso, otherwise Near Fine. Criterion Collection 186.
