Het uit krijgsgevangenschap terugkerende, gedesorga-niseerde Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch leger zag zich na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Azië voor de gigantische taak geplaatst om in een overzees rijk dat in dezelfde tijd verscheurd werd door revolutie, met ondervoede en uitgeputte mulitairen een adequaat leger op te bouwen dat naar de eisen van de tijd herschoold en gereorganiseerd moest worden. In plaats van met recuperatieverlof te gaan moest eerst nog een oorlog worden uitgevochten en op korte termijn orde en rust worden hersteld in de Oost-Indische kolonie. Aangezien het KNIL dit niet alleen af kon, werd het inzetbare gedeelte van de Koninklijke Landmacht te hulp gezonden. De KL-troepen werden opgehangen aan de nieuwe KNIL-organisatie. Ook de dienst van de Indische Kwartiermeester-Generaal was zo'n KNIL-organisatie. Over die Indische KMG is slechts fragmentarisch gepubliceerd. Dit boek is dan ook het eerste dat een totaallicht werpt op deze organisatie. Size: A5 formaat.

The role of the endothelium, especially of the coronary intravascular species is a relatively new and fascinating development in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. Three major aspects of endothelial function receive attention in this volume: its regulatory role in myocardial function, evidence for which is gradually forthcoming, with possible great implications for disease states such as volume overload and failure its role in the calcium metabolism of vascular smooth muscle cells and the effects of calcium antagonists and the endothelial dysfunction generated by coronary angioplasty and its possible restoration by cholesterol reduction. The topic of imaging atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary arteries is discussed with the emphasis on advanced methods: single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging techniques. A wholly new development is the characterization of the atherosclerotic lesion by Raman spectroscopy using a laser beam to illuminate the vascular wall. Various aspects of inflammation related to the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes, in particular unstable angina, are illuminated, as well as the role of blood-borne substances as risk factors for atherosclerosis. Transgenic mice carrying the gene for human APOE\*3 Leiden are being used successfully to study the environmental and genetic factors that influence the remnant lipoprotein metabolism. Possibilities for gene therapy to treat atherosclerosis in the clinic are being investigated in animal models. Finally, as the book is based on 50 years of Cardiology in Leiden, the history of its development up to the present day is the topic of a separate chapter. This book is intended for cardiologists, internal medicine specialists, nuclear medicine specialists, thoracic surgeons, cardiovascular radiologists and basic scientists in the field of the cardiovascular system.

Red and black title page, frontis is missing and page (iii) is torn vertically and lacking 1/3 of the page, Wonderful engravings and lots of them, many showing the devils that beset the man attempting unsuccesfully to sleep. The first volume ends on Twee-en Tachtig Jarig Levn "eynde", then the Register van Boeken by J. en H. van der Deyster Gedrukt (in Gothic type), then an engraved frontis plate for the Spiegel. the title page "den lesten Druk, van nieuws oversien en gecorrigeert, en van veel Druksauten verbetert, with the publishing information of van der utte, Amsterdam but no date. Also wonderfully illustrated with engravings, printed in both Gothic type and standard type. There are no final blanks for the Spiegel but it is complete. Leather boards are a bit crackled, rubbed at the corners and edges. Spine has 5 raised bands with gilt decorations and a #4 in gilt, spine tips are quite worn, front hinge cracking and front board threatening to detach but still holding. Half title for Slapeloose Nachten has an old ownership inscription and there is a very old pressed violet at page 81 that has caused some browning, otherwise clean and unmarked. Paper is sturdy with only moderate foxing and aging. Quite scarce. ; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
