Hardcover. Revised Edition. Quarto, 124, [2] pages. In Poor condition. Quarter-bound in leather with paper boards. Spine has a significant loss of leather and severe cracking. Boards are almost fully detached from spine, has chipping to edges, stains and scuff marks throughout. Textblock has cracking to hinges, chipping to the front free end page, the front free end page is detached and the rear free end page is partially detached, has age toning, light stains and smudge marks throughout. Contains a hand-written tipped-in endorsement note from John McCloskey (1810-1885), which reads: "Having examined William H. Sadlier's Excelsior Geographies, we take pleasure in saying that we fully approve of them, recommend them for use especially in Catholic Schools" signed and dated "New York Feb. 20 1877". Shelved in Room F. John McCloskey (March 10, 1810 October 10, 1885) was an American Catholic prelate who became the first American-born archbishop of New York City and later the first American cardinal in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. Born in New York, to Irish immigrant parents, McCloskey was educated at Mount St. Mary's College and ordained to the priesthood in 1834. He served in various pastoral and administrative roles before being appointed Bishop of Albany in 1847. In 1864, he was named Archbishop of New York, where he oversaw significant growth in the Catholic population, expanded parishes and schools, and strengthened Catholic charitable institutions during a period of heavy immigration. In 1875, Pope Pius IX elevated him to the College of Cardinals, marking a milestone for the American Church. McCloskey's leadership helped establish a stronger Catholic presence in the United States during the 19th century. 1409499. Special Collections.
