Nello specifico, si indagano le cause del fenomeno, le sue implicazioni e i vari effetti prodotti nella tradizione manoscritta di molti classici greci. La I Parte del lavoro è di natura teorica. Essa mira a definire concetto, forme e funzioni dei titoli in campo letterario. Questa Parte intende, inoltre, proporre un metodo di analisi delle citazioni di opere antiche. La II e III Parte ripercorrono invece storicamente l'emergere della prassi dei titoli. La II Parte è dedicata a opere poetiche prodotte tra età arcaica e classica, la III a quelle in prosa.
