Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. An outrageously funny debut novel about a woman who moves to a small beach town looking for peace, only to find herself in an all-out war with her neighbors. When Kathleen Deane's husband, Tom, tells her he's no longer happy with his life and their marriage, Kathleen is confused. They live in Kansas. They've been married thirty years. Who said anything about being happy? But with Tom off finding himself, Kathleen starts to think about what she wants. And her thoughts lead her to a small beach community on the east coast, a town called Whitbey that has always looked lovely in the Christmas letters her childhood friend Josie sends every year. It turns out, though, that life in Whitbey is nothing like Josie's letters. Kathleen's new neighbor, Rosemary, is cantankerous, and the town's supervisor won't return Kathleen's emails, but worst of all is the Sugar Cube, the monstrosity masquerading as a holiday home that Kathleen's absentee neighbors are building next door to her quaint (read: tiny) cottage. As Kathleen gets more and more involved in the fight against the Sugar Cube and town politics overall, she realizes that Whitbey may not be a fairytale, but it just might be exactly what she needed. Save What's Left can best be described as the un-beach read. It pulls back the curtain on life in a beach town, revealing the true cost of a pretty view. Told from the candid and irreverent perspective of a newcomer turned local, this is a story of forgiveness, fortitude, and second chances.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Did you ever wonder how a home is built? Who thinks of the house first? Who can use the big cement mixers in their job? Follow a house - a special house - as it goes from idea to becoming someone's very own home. The House that She Built educates young readers about all the people and skills that go into building a home. One by one, we learn about: the architectframerrooferplumberinterior designerelectrician. and many more workers at a construction site. As they contribute their individual skills, each one is needed to complete the collective project -- a new home. With illustrations that connect and empower and words that build upon each other with each page, this book will leave all kids (she, he, and they) excited about their own skills and interested in learning new ones. In addition to showing kids careers they can dream about and explore, this story bridges the gap between the classic books Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and Bob the Builder and an inclusive world where everyone can follow their dreams and use their skills. The House That She Built shows how STEM and STEAM jobs that use science, technology, math, and the arts all work together for a common goal. Based on a true story The House that She Built was inspired by the team of real women who came together from around the country to build a one-of-a-kind home. The book is supported by industry leaders, 84 Lumber and Andersen Windows & Doors.Proceeds from the book will support workforce development initiatives. REVIEWERS AGREE that kids should read The House That She Built While my daughters loved to hear about The House That Jack Built, I wish we could also have read The House That She Built, a story that helps broaden horizons for girls and boys. --Denise Dersin, Executive Editor, Professional Builder Magazine The books we read as children can shape the people we grow up to be. The House That She Built is empowering, encouraging, informative, and inspiring. Every child needs a book like this on their shelf that says, You can do anything you set your mind to. --Amy Riley, Preschool Teacher A one-of-a-kind, incredible book for educating children and parents about the skilled trades. Sharing stories of successful women and careers in construction is important for building our workforce and for making the world a better place. As a woman-owned company, it is especially rewarding for 84 Lumber to participate in this project. --Maggie Hardy Knox, President and Owner of 84 Lumber We are delighted to share this story of women in construction to inspire the next generation of young women to pursue rewarding careers in the trades.Throughout our history, women have played a pivotal role in shaping our company and the building industry. --Annie Zipfel, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer atAndersen Corporation This book is the key to help children explore the world of construction and all it has to offer. They can identify with the relatable characters and all the things that they can do in the construction industry. It shows that women can do anything that they put their minds to A much-needed resource. --Charner Rodgers, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Tuskegee University, Robert R Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The thread of the book is an account of the 1970 Missouri large schools high school state football championship my St. Louis University High team won. We were unlikely champions: undersized, not very fast, no home field, high academic standards for admission, half our games against Top 10 teams in the state. We barely qualified for the four-team state playoff, we faced the heavily favored title game opponent having won our previous four games by an average of just 4.5 points, including a 14-13 victory over our archrival in front of 18,000 people at Busch Stadium. I was a center and linebacker, and one of the team captains. The story of the book, though, is how football and that championship season became a refuge for my classmates and me, young Baby Boomers whose great but naIve ambition was tempered by the frightening, threatening social turmoil of the late 1960s. The Vietnam War was escalating, the Civil Rights Movement was exploding, college campuses were erupting in protest, and many of us were at war with our parents' generation.Adding to our drama, our beloved Student Council vice president and classmate was wounded in a robbery attempt on August 1 of 1970, and died two weeks later, the day before our football season workouts began. We devoted our season to him.I tell this true story from the first person, and through the reminiscences of a handful of the key characters who were central to it, including our legendary head coach Paul Martel, who died in January 2016 at age 91. I conclude the book with reflections of what that season and accomplishment meant to us, particularly as we now face the final quarter of our lives. Educated by Jesuit priests, who challenged us to question, to commit to something, and to act, we pulled together in common purpose, at least for that season. Most of us were buoyed by our belief in each other, and by our faith in God. And, at least for me, I experienced life lessons that proved invaluable for what I was to become: a daily newspaper sportswriter and columnist, then a business executive, husband and father. true sports stories such as Remember the Titans, Hoosiers, Friday Night Lights, and One Shot at Forever (the story of the small-school Macon, Illinois baseball team that finished second in the 1971 Illinois baseball tournament), offer drama beyond the tension of high school competition on the fields and courts. This story provides plenty for an avid sports fan. But it, too, offers much more. I suspect Baby Boomers around the country, and readers of all ages, can relate to the way dreams evolve, become compromised or rationalized, and come to rest. And how hard-earned accomplishments, especially those boosted by the kind hand of an unseen power, provide meaning and comfort as we reflect on the impact we have made on the world. Among the characters: our best player, an earnest and unselfish athlete who had his best game in the state championship; our only African-American teammate, whose parents moved him to St. Louis to distance him from the racial turmoil in central Alabama in the mid-1960s; our biggest player, a character seemingly straight from Clair Bee's Chip Hilton stories; our quarterback, a free-spirited genius who exasperated the coaches but pulled off heroic plays; an under-sized defensive end seemingly possessed by the spirit of his cherished older brother killed in Vietnam; and our Student Council secretary, an African-American who challenged us to confront society's racial issues and later revealed he is gay.…

GMA BOOK CLUB PICK * ONE OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE'S BEST BOOKS OF SUMMER * An outrageously funny debut novel about a woman who moves to a small beach town looking for peace, only to find herself in an all-out war with her neighbors.
