In this remarkable book the author tries to demonstrate that the friendship between Dante (c. 1265-1321), the major Italian poet of the Middle Ages and Immanuel Romano (1261-1328), the Italian-Jewish scholar and satirical poet, was highly improbable. The only aspect of Immanuel's oeuvre that attracted the constant attention of historians during the 19th century was the relationship between Dante and Immanuel Romano. Opinion was divided between those who believed they had a personal acquaintance and friendship (Shadal, D. Kaufmann, F. Servi, M. Steinschneider, M. Soave, G. Carducci, C. Bernheimer) and those who were more sceptical (S. Munk or F.-X. Kraus). The question of their friendship was still debated throughout the 20th century, although Umberto Cassuto has convincingly demonstrated its improbability in his "Dante e Manoello." About the author: Umberto Cassuto, also known as Moshe David Cassuto (1883-1951), was a rabbi and Biblical scholar born in Florence, Italy. He studied there at the university and the Collegio Rabbinico. After getting a degree and Semicha, he taught in both institutions. From 1914 to 1925, he was chief rabbi of Florence. In 1925 he became professor of Hebrew and literature in the University of Florence and then took the chair of Hebrew language at the University of Rome La Sapienza. When the 1938 anti-Semitic laws forced him from this position, he moved to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Umberto's son Nathan was also a rabbi in Florence. He went into hiding during World War II, was betrayed and perished in the Nazi death camps. Nathan's wife and children were saved and emigrated to Israel.

His book The Goddess Anath is a classic of its kind. It was first published in Hebrew by the Bilalik Institute in 1951, reprinted in 1953, 1958, and 1965, and appears now in the English translation of Prof. ABRAHAMS (reprint 2009). The book contains three parts a) an introduction to Ugaritic literature that is based on the texts discovered (up to 1951) at the Ras-Shamra in general, and on the epic of Baal in particular b) some Ugaritic tablets containing episodes from the epic of Baal, in which the Goddess Anath plays an important role. These texts appear in three parallel columns: the first gives a transcription of the Ugaritic text in Latin characters, the second contains Cassuto's Hebrew translation, and the third comprises the English rendering. c) A commentary on these texts.
