But, what do we know of the boundaries of these provinces and of their internal structure Not much. In order to better understand the nature and function of the empire's internal frontiers, and to assess the territorial, social and economic structure of provincial organization, an international project was launched by the University of Zurich.An interdisciplinary group of European scientists gathered in Rome in 2016 in order to present and discuss first outcomes of this initiative.The question of Roman provincial borders can be addressed in various ways. A critical analysis of written sources gives insight into the significance of borders for political and tax organization. The study of landscapes and settlements by means of geographical information systems (GIS) allows to visualize topo-geographic structures, and to propose effective lines of border, as in the case of the frontier between Germania superior and Raetia. By analyzing the production and distribution of specific material culture such as pottery, coins or costume, economic structures become apparent; moreover, areas of cultural habits can be studied with regard to provincial borders. Bioarchaeology is yet another approach: besides providing information on human dietary habits, animal bones and botanical remains also contain evidence on environment, animal husbandry, crafts, trade, social structures, and religious beliefs. These spheres could all exhibit regional characteristics, and thus be questioned with regard to spaces and frontiers in Roman provinces. Agia Varvara-Almyras: an Iron Age Copper Smelting Site in Cyprus presents the results of a comprehensive post-excavation analysis of the stratigraphy (part I), also of the geology, metallurgical materials (furnaces, tuyeres), finds (pottery, furnace lining, stone tools), as well as a synthesis of the copper smelting technology at Agia Varvara-Almyras (part II). The excavation analysis not only focuses on pyrotechnical information from individual furnaces, but also provides a detailed study of the spatial organisation as well as of the living conditions on the smelting site. An elaborate reconstruction of the features in a 3D model allows the visualisation of formerly-dispersed loci of copper production. Based on this virtual rebuilding of the hillock named Almyras, it becomes clear that archaeometallurgy must be unchained, and the idea of an 'operational chain' must be replaced by a more multidimensional research strategy labelled as an 'operational web'. The focus of the manifold surveys, analyses and modelings is on settlement structures, environmental contexts, and ecodynamic processes, from the younger Prehistoric periods to Roman times. The texts are gathered in over a dozen contributions, teaming 25 authors from various disciplines and countries of Alpine Europe.The main objective of the investigations is the Leventina valley, situated on one of today's major transalpine routes, leading from the Insubrian lakes across St Gotthard pass to the Reuss valley and Central Switzerland. Very few archaeological remains were known from this area before the onset of the project, in particular with regard to the abundant subalpine environments. Neuware - Auf der Motta Vallac bei Salouf, Surses, im Kanton Graubünden führte das Schweizerische Landesmuseum in den Jahrenzwischen 1972 und 1979 mehrere Ausgrabungskampagnen durch. Auf dem Felsrücken an strategisch günstiger Lage stiessman auf menschliche Spuren, die von einer wiederholten Benutzung des Gebiets während mehr als 2000 Jahren zeugen. ZumVorschein kamen Überreste einer bronzezeitlichen Siedlung sowie eisenzeitliche, römische und mittelalterliche Funde beziehungsweise Strukturen.Die Gesamtpublikation der Grabungsergebnisse war ein lang gehegtes Desiderat. Kurz vor seinem Tod übergab der Ausgräber René Wyss (1925-2017) Fundmaterial von der Motta Vallac der Universität Zürich und dem Schweizerischen Nationalmuseum, welche sich an den Archäologischen Dienst Graubünden wandten. Bis 2019 wurde eine beträchtliche Menge an Fundmaterial, Originalzeichnungen, Grabungsfotos und -plänen der Altgrabung zusammengestellt. Die drei Studierenden der Universität Zürich Michelle Bradler (prähistorische/römische Befunde), Pierina Roffler (Keramik) und Joëlle Jäger (Steingeräte und Buntmetalle) wurden mit der Fundbearbeitung und wissenschaftlichen Auswertung betraut.
