Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The 7th Armoured Division is one of the most famous formations that ever served in the British Army. It was formed in the desert of North Africa just before the Second World War. The division fought in most of the major battles of the Western Desert campaign, was then engaged in the Tunisian campaign. This history of the Desert Rats begins in the spring of 1940 when the 7th Armoured Division was given the task of stemming the Axis advance in North Africa and protecting the vital Suez Canal. The troops adopted the nickname the 'Desert Rats' after the badge - depicting a desert creature called a jerboa - which they wore on their shoulders. It was forced to retreat into Egypt and many of its men were surrounded at Tobruk. But they fought back and beat Rommel's combined German and Italian forces at the battle of El Alamein in October 1942. As Winston Churchill wrote: 'Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.' The Desert Rats pushed the Afrika Korps and their Italian allies west across Libya and Tunisia, winning back the strategic port of Tobruk in the process.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. CARVER, Lt.-Col. R. M. P. A Short History of the Seventh Armoured Division, October 1938-May 1943. Middle East Forces: privately printed by the Printing and Stationery Service, 1943. First edition. Quarto. 43 pp., with three folding maps. The copy of Captain John Rennie Ballingal MC (170388), 11th Hussars, later honorary Major, giving this scarce wartime publication exceptionally appropriate regimental provenance. Compiled by Lt.-Col. R. M. P. Carver, the booklet is a contemporary history of the famous 7th Armoured Division, the "Desert Rats", from its formation in 1938 through the Western Desert campaign, Operation Compass, Beda Fomm, the struggle against Rommel's Afrika Korps, El Alamein and the advance to Tunis in May 1943. The 11th Hussars served as the Division's reconnaissance regiment, operating ahead of the main formations and providing intelligence on enemy positions, routes and terrain. Ballingal (1920-1967) was awarded the Military Cross for "gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East", gazetted on 23 April 1942. Surviving 11th Hussars war diaries record him commanding armoured-car patrols in the Western Desert: on 6 December 1941 his troop occupied an observation position and engaged enemy forces; on 12 December his patrol captured a gun, two tractors and two lorries; and on Christmas Day his troop captured an Italian lorry, an officer and two other ranks. He subsequently served through Italy and north-west Europe, became second-in-command of B Squadron in January 1945 and temporarily assumed command in May; after the war he served as Adjutant of the 11th Hussars in Germany and retired in 1952 with the honorary rank of Major. The original 1943 booklet is institutionally recorded as an official wartime publication printed by the Printing and Stationery Service, Middle East Forces; modern facsimile/reprint editions exist, making identification of the original issue important. Binding nice and tight with slight rubbing; original wrappers generally clean with slight spotting; pages nice and clean; three folding maps present and nice and clean. Now housed in an easily removable clear acetate sleeve. Very good. A strong association copy of an important contemporary history of the Desert Rats, directly linked to a decorated officer of the 11th Hussars who served in the campaigns described. Stock code 004188.
