Where the mazzeri are harbingers of death, the signadori are guardians of life-they practise folk medicine, but more importantly, they practise folk medicine, but more importantly, they secure release from the curse of the Evil Eye. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Carrington's beguiling letters take us beyond the Bloomsbury group to discuss sexual mores, how to be an artist, and what it is to be truly oneself.Known only by her surname, Dora Carrington was the star of her year at the Slade School of Fine Art, and was friends with some of the greatest minds of her day, including Virginia Woolf, Rosamund Lehmann and Maynard Keynes. For over a decade she was the companion of homosexual writer Lytton Strachey, and - stricken without him- killed herself when he died in 1932. Though she never achieved the fame her early career promised, in her determination to live life according to her own nature - especially in relation to her work and her fluid attitude to sex, gender and sexuality - she fought battles that remain familiar and urgent today. Now, through her passionate, playful and honest letters, we can encounter the maverick artist and compelling personality afresh and in her own words.…

paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Two pages, cr. 8vo, fold marks, good condition. Text: "Your enquiry about woodcuts and bookplates made by my sister Dora Carrington for Lytton Strachey and others: You will find in the book on her Letters & Diaries edited by David Garnett (Cape 1970) and Paper Back OUP, several reproductions of her work in that medium, either for Hogarth Press, or for book plates for friends. It was John Nash who taught her, he himself being an experienced engraver. I have one of two original proofs but value them too highly to spare them. I also have a photo copy of several which I had made for reference which I could loan you if you are anxious, though it is not any use for reproduction. I gave some account of this & other crafts she took up in my book on her art [.]. | Your P.S. about a bookplate by Halsey Ricardo is something I do not recall. Lytton's library was left to his brother James and to Roger Senhouse. But all his brothers & sisters died some time ago. I believe the widow of his nephew, Dick Strachey, may have inherited some of the library [.]. | I am afraid that is all the help I can give you.".…
