Missing the twenty engraved plates by Carrachi, and containing the text only. The plates depict couples and scenes from mythology, including Jupiter and Juno, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Ovid sand Corinne. I Modi (The Ways), also known as The Sixteen Pleasures or under the Latin title De omnibus Veneris Schematibus, is a famous erotic book of the Italian Renaissance in which a series of sexual positions were explicitly depicted in engravings. While the original edition was apparently completely destroyed by the Catholic Church, fragments of a later edition survived. The second edition was accompanied by sonnets written by Pietro Aretino, which described the sexual acts depicted. The original illustrations were probably copied by Agostino Caracci, whose version survives. In a calf binding with gilt dentelles. Externally, smart, though with some rubbing and marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd patch of foxing. Very Good Indeed. book.

Embora a edição original tenha sido aparentemente toda destruída pela Igreja Católica, fragmentos de uma edição posterior sobreviveram. Containing 63 plates, of which 49 are hand-coloured, 11 are black and white, and 3 are black, white and sepia. Plates date from 1863 to 1883 and most are from the Journal des Demoiselles, with the eight remaining plates being from La Poupee Modele. Many plates are double-page or fold-out. Two of the coloured plates appear twice in the book, and one double-page black and white plate appears three times. This is a valuable resource for those interested in Eighteenth Century costume. In a quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, a trifle worn. The top portion of the backstrip is lifting. Internally, three plates detached but present with many further plates starting. Generally bright with occasional spotting and handling marks. Very Good. book.

2 ouvrages reliés en un volume in-plano (566 x 410 mm), demi-basane de l'époque, dos lisse orné de compartiments fleuronnés, roulette en place des nerfs, pièce de titre de chagrin noir. 1- Unique exemplaire connu de ce premier retirage exécuté à Paris en 1802 par François Étienne Joubert, à partir des matrices originales gravées par Jean Le Blond pour Jacques Chéreau à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Le tirage initial publié par Jacques Chéreau est lui-même d'une extrême rareté ; un seul exemplaire subsiste (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek). Cette suite de quarante planches numérotées reproduit les fresques de la "Galerie des Carracci" au Palais Farnèse, exécutées à Rome, au tournant du XVIIe siècle, par Annibale Carracci, avec la collaboration de ses frères et de plusieurs élèves. Ce cycle mythologique, consacré pour l'essentiel aux amours des dieux, constitue l'un des chefs-d'uvre de la peinture décorative de la Renaissance tardive. Ces compositions furent gravées pour la première fois à Rome par Carlo Cesio en 1657; les différentes éditions demeurent rarement complètes. Tache d'encre en marge supérieure sans atteinte aux planches jusqu'à la planche 11, et petit manque de papier (sur 2 cm) en marge inférieure à la planche 5. 2- Premier retirage également réalisé en 1802 à Paris par Joubert à partir des matrices gravées en 1659 par Louis de Châtillon, d'après les fresques du Palais Magnani à Bologne, peintes entre 1589 et 1592 par Annibale Carracci avec la collaboration de Ludovico et Agostino Carracci. Cette suite reproduit le cycle consacré à l'histoire de Romulus et Rémus, jalon majeur de l'évolution de la peinture baroque et modèle fondateur pour la peinture d'histoire du XVIIe siècle. Elle comprend ici 13 planches numérotées (sur 15 annoncées, les 10 et 13 font défaut). Rare, seuls quatre exemplaires sont conservés en institution. Les deux suites furent diffusées et vendues séparément. Elles s'ouvrent sur une notice de l'éditeur Joubert présentant son catalogue complet, où figurent bien les deux titres décrits. Provenance : "Louis de Saint-Aulaire, rue du Colombier, Hôtel d'Angleterre" ; Louis-Clair de Beaupoil, comte de Sainte-Aulaire (1778-1854), ambassadeur, homme politique et membre de l'Académie française. Reliure de l'époque, abîmée. Petit manque de papier (1 cm) en marge inférieure de la planche 1 sans atteinte à la gravure, et infime déchirure (1,5 cm) en marge des planches 5 et 14. Les planches sont en très bon état de conservation et à très grandes marges.
