His last campaign was agains the use of children to clear chimneys, where deaths and serious illness were all too common. The eight pamphlets reprinted here include one by David Porter (a 'humane' master sweep) and others promoting the use of mechanical cleaning rather than children. The final date is that of the Chimney Sweepers and Chimneys Regulation Act 1840, which made it illegal for anyone under 21 to work as a sweep. It was widely ignored until an 1875 Act allowed legal enforcement by the police.
