Il volume, dedicato all'opera scrittoria di Bartolomeo Fonzio, Fontius (1446-1513), raccoglie risultati di un'indagine condotta sui fondi manoscritti di diverse biblioteche, in specie della Laurenziana, della Riccardiana e della Nazionale di Firenze. La personalità del Fonzio è ricostruita nella prospettiva completa dei codici da lui trascritti, postillati e posseduti, di cui vengono dati i cataloghi, accompagnati da indici circostanziati. In pochi umanisti attività filologica ed erudita e attività scrittoria - anche sul piano della impaginazione e della forma letteraria appaiono così intimamente e significativamente congiunte come nel Fonzio: e per nessuno, forse, è consentito ricostruire, con altrettanta ricchezza di documenti e continuità, scriptorium e biblioteca; offrendo altresì uno scorcio di un momento decisivo per la storia della cultura, in una città, Firenze, a cui dobbiamo anche la scrittura dell'età moderna. Precede un saggio paleografico di Emanuele Casamassima, in cui sono ammirevolmente studiati alcuni aspetti del probleni relativo alla scrittura «fusa et velox» degli umanisti, che nel Fonzio è testimoniata con rara rilevanza.
