Edizione originale di questa trattazione che è da ritenere il primo tentativo, condotto con perizia storiografica, di gettare luce sugli avvenimenti italiani tardomedievali. (Zusammenfassung des Inhaltes: argumenta librorum), 924 S. 28 Bl. (Index rerum et verborum memorabilium: in drei Spalten) und eine grrössere Drucker-Vignette auf der Rückseite des letzten Blattes. Falttafeln zwischen S. 174-175 (2 Tafeln) und 422-423 (2 Tafeln). Auf 300-760 ein kleiner, schwacher Wasserfleck, der aber den Text nicht betrifft. Der Buchblock ist mit gelegentlicher minimaler Vergilbung, aber sauber ohne Markierungen. Sehr feste Buchbindung. Einband mit Pergament der Zeit. Modernes Exlibris auf dem Innendeckel. Schließen fehlen , dafür nur ein Ersatz (Leinenriemen). Insgesamt ein recht gutes Exemplar (bis sehr gut). Carolus Sigonius oder Carlo Sigonio (1524 Modena-1584 ebenda) war ein italienischer Humanist, Historiker und Rechtshistoriker. Sein Ruf beruht auf seinen Untersuchungen zur Geschichte Roms und Athens. Zu den wichtigen Werken zählen De antiquo iure Romanorum, Italiae, provinciarum (1560), De Romanae jurisprudentiae iudiciis libri XI (1574), De republica Atheniensium (1564) und De Atheniensium et Lacedaemoniorum temporibus libri V (1565). Zu diesen Werken gesellt sich eine ähnliche Untersuchung über die Juden De republica hebreorum libri VII (1582). All diese Werke sind im Exemplar, das hier angeboten wird, enthalten. Außerdem ist das Werk In B. Sulpicii Severi historicos libros duos, Commenarii duo (1581) abgedruckt. Vgl. William McCuaig: Carlo Sigonio. Diese Ausgabe könnte ein Nachdruck von der Ausgage von Bologna 1573 (Societas typographiae Bononiensis) sein, die die Werke zum römischen Recht abdruckt, der Frankfurter Verleger hat die anderen Werke hinzugefügt. Das abgedruckte Vorwort von 1573, der der Ausgabe von Bologna entnommen worden ist, bezieht sich nur auf die Werke über das römische Recht; er hat offensichtlich die vier Titel der Werke ( De antiquo iure civium Romanorum libri II, De antiquo iure Italiae libri III, De antiquo iure provinciarum libri III und De iudiciis libri III zusamengefaßt und die Gesamtzahl der Bücher (12) errechnet und sie dem neuen Gesamttitel hinzugefügt. Auf den Verleger gehen ebenfalls die Erstellung des Registers sowie die Zusammefassungen des Inhalts zurück, wie aus dem Titel hervorgeht. Nicht bei Brunet, Manuel: V, coll. 379-380, der aber keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erhebt und dabei bemerkt, daß er nicht alle Ausgaben verzeichnet hat, weil sie (insbesondere die von Paulus Manutius) nur mittelmäßige Preisen erreichen. McCuaig, op. cit, 345-356 (aufgrund von Autopsie) bieter eine recht vollständige Bibliographie der Werke mit Kommentar Bei Adams, II , p.204, n. 1101. Buch.

Zustand: molto buono. in-4 (mm 206x137), pp. (8), 591( i.e. 589 essendo le pp. 585-586 omesse nella numerazione), (119 su 123 di indice, mancando 2 ff., i2-3), magnifica legatura del XVII secolo in marocchino avana con ricca decorazione ai piccoli ferri in oro che formano larghi riquadri, al centro dei quali entro serto d'alloro compare in capitali la scritta ''ex dono Anaonii Druot 1652'' sormontata da uno stemma con i tre gigli di Francia e al di sotto stemma con tre palle del Collegio di Chalon-sur-Saone. Bellissime sguardie con impresse a secco armi di ''Machéco de Prémeaux'' (Olivier 229, n. 3). Pregevole edizione (la princeps dell'anno precedente a Venezia) di quello che è comunemente considerato il primo tentativo di gettare luce sugli avvenimenti italiani tardomedievali.
