Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Second Impression. Stated Second Impression, published in 1949, and with 119 pp. Bound simply in white paper over boards, printed in brown lettering and with brown illustration to bottom right corner. Original publisher's dust jacket present, moderately worns, mildly soiled, with some chipping to extremities, protected in heavy Brodart cover. Duotone endpapers front and rear, and with multiple duotone illustrations throughout to virtually every page. Six full-color plates; these plates and the duotone illustrations were the product "of fourteen months in Africa spent mainly on the West Coast, that district from which the black population of the United States was drawn. Taking no more luggage than we would under ordinary traveling conditions, we moved from port to port and entered the far interior. Such transportation as offered, we used: motor lorries; jungle omnibuses catering only to black passengers; launches; canoes; flat-bottomed river boats; and cargo steamers--nine of these, sailing under six different flags. When there were trains, we rode in them; when none, we trekked. This travel was beset with discomfort and, where sanitation, at its best, is poor, with dangers of tropical plagues. Hotels were few and of the frontier type. We took what shelter we could find. We lodged with missionaries of many nationalities and sects. Traders rented us spare rooms over shops. We occupied Government Rest Houses or, equipped for camping, dwelt alone in Bush villages." [4], 5-119 [1] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Good Only. Cyrus Le Roy Baldridge (illustrator). A profusely illustrated account of travelling through Africa by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge and Caroline Singer. Cyrus Leroy Baldridge was an artist, illustrator, author and adventurer who travelled around the world with the writer and his fellow co-author Caroline Singer. This text details the travels of Baldridge and Singer across Africa from Sierra Leone to Ethiopia, a journey made mostly on foot. Described as an 'elegant and respectful portrayal of black African culture written at a time when whites hardly even acknowledged its existence', this text later led the couple to become deeply committed to the rights of black Americans. Indeed, throughout his lifetime Baldridge avidly refused to work with any author who portrayed another race as inferior or foolish. "The dual record of fourteen months in Africa spent mainly on the West Coast." With lovely, stylised illustrations throughout, many of which are in vibrant colour. In a decorative paper covered binding. Externally, worn with minor loss to the paper to some extremities. Paper on spine is lifting but still intact. Some small red marks to lettering of front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean with some scattered spotting, most prominent to first and last few pages. Good Only. book.
