Carney was a U.S. Navy admiral and had a distinguished career through World War Two; he helped to arrange and was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; he served as commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Southern Europe (1951-53) and Chief of Naval Operations (1953-54). MacArthur was a famed New York socialite and philanthropist and devoted wife of controversial general Douglas MacArthur; she was at his side aboard a PT boat when he left the Philippines ahead of a Japanese siege; she often represented him at official functions.
