On the title page red stamp of Carlo Puini (1839-1924), who was an Italian sinologist, orientalist and historian of East Asian religions, and one of the most prolific representatives of Italian Oriental studies between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some light browning, but a very good copy. Second edition of David Richardson's important bilingual edition and English translation of the Manugye Dhammathat, one of the principal compilations of traditional Burmese law. The work had first appeared at Moulmein in 1847 and became one of the earliest substantial attempts to make Burmese jurisprudence accessible to British administrators and European scholars. The Manugye belongs to the Burmese tradition of dhammathat, legal compilations derived in part from Indian juridical models but substantially adapted to the social, political and Buddhist context of Burma. These texts dealt with such matters as marriage, inheritance, property, debt, contract, family relations and civil disputes, and formed an important part of the legal culture of pre-colonial Burma. Richardson's edition is particularly valuable because the Burmese text is printed together with the English translation, preserving not only his rendering but also the particular textual recension on which it was based. The title's ?XIV vols. in one? refers to the fourteen books or divisions of the text gathered into a single physical volume. Later manuscript research has shown that other recensions of the Manugye preserve additional material, making Richardson's edition an important witness to the textual history of Burmese law rather than merely a translation. David Richardson was a British military surgeon, administrator, linguist and traveller active in Burma and the neighbouring regions during the first half of the nineteenth century. He served in Tenasserim and acquired an unusually strong command of Burmese and Mon, combining medical service with administrative and diplomatic duties. He travelled extensively through Burma, Siam and the frontier regions and took part in official missions, including a mission to Bangkok in 1838?1839. His practical familiarity with local languages, institutions and customary law placed him in an exceptional position to undertake the translation of the Damathat. Richardson died shortly before the appearance of the first edition in 1847. The importance of the work lies at the intersection of indigenous legal tradition and colonial administration. Richardson translated the Manugye at a moment when British authorities increasingly needed access to local legal norms in the territories already under their control. The translation thus became both a scholarly document and an instrument of legal mediation, contributing to the process by which Burmese law was interpreted, classified and applied within the developing structures of British Burma. The present second edition of 1874 belongs to a significant phase in that process. Lower Burma had already been incorporated into the British Empire, while Upper Burma remained under the Konbaung monarchy until its annexation in 1885. The continued republication of Richardson's translation demonstrates the enduring administrative and scholarly relevance of the text in the decades preceding the complete colonial conquest of Burma.
