Subjects: Najd (Saudi Arabia) --Description and travel --Travel literature. Series: Argonaut Press, no.16. Notes: originally published: London, The Argonaut Press, 1938. Summary: Guarmani was one of the earliest European travelers to visit Central Arabia. The translation is made from the original Italian text of 1866. Guarmani went, commissioned to buy Arab stallions for the French Government and for the King of Italy, to Najd. He had a wider vision than the average horse-coper, and he records an interesting tale of conditions in the Desert Peninsula at a moment when the rival dynasties - Rashidan and Saudian - were contending for supremacy. The book is a revised edition of that originally published by the Arab Bureau Cairo - for official use only - in 1917, and considering the comparative rarity of this edition as also of the original Jerusalem text, the present reissue by the Argonaut Press should be of interest to all, especially to those familiar with Arabia and its people. 1 Kg.…

4to (168 x 250 mm). 164 pp. With an errata sheet mounted to lower pastedown. Original printed wrappers. First edition. Exceptionally rare and "highly regarded early treatise on the Arabian horse" (Howgego). A pioneering work on the pure-blooded Arabian horse discussing its five traditional strains: Kuhaylan, Ubayyan, Saqlawi, Hamdani, and Hadban. Based on sixteen years of research in Syria, Palestine, Egypt and the deserts of Arabia, this work has become over time a fundamental reference for the history of hippology and ethnography of the Arab world. - Carlo Guarmani (1828-84) was a renowned Italian horse expert and dealer, explorer, and orientalist. He "arrived in the Levant in 1850 as an agent of the French postal service in Jerusalem, and subsequently spent sixteen years in Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and the Arabian desert" (Howgego). While travelling he became fluent in Arabic, and in 1864 was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III and King Victor Emmanuel II to acquire pure-bred Arab stallions for the cavalry of the French and Italian armies. Although disguised as Khalil Agha, master of horse to Fuad Pasha, governor of Damascus, he "was already on good terms with many of the tribal leaders and would encounter few difficulties". Several months later, and after several risky adventures, Guarmani "successfully purchased three prime stallions for the exorbitant price of 100 camels" (ibid.). - Never seen at auction. A single library copy traceable online, at the Royal Library of Sweden. - Worming with some loss of paper to last leaf of text, lower flyleaf, and rear cover. Small wormhole near the gutter starting at page 109 through to rear cover. Flyleaf and title-page slightly waterstained. One manuscript correction to page 129. - Howgego, III G58. OCLC 186943869. Cf. Boyd/P. 53 (1977 ed.). Not in Huth or Menessier de la Lance. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. xi, 434 pp., modern hard boards, original wrappers preserved, title printed on spine, paper slightly browned, occasional foxing, otherwise copy in good condition. A presentation copy by author inscribed on top title page. Extremely rare work Copac lists only one copy at the British Library. Not in any bibliography related to the Holy Land. Carlo Claudio Camillo Guarmani ( 1828 - 1884 ) was a great horse expert and passionate Italian traveller . He travelled through the Arab countries and to the fact that he spoke well the Arabic language. In September 1863, he was commissioned by the general Fleury, aide-de-camp to Napoleon III and general manager of the Imperial Equine Breeds, and shortly thereafter Victor Emmanuel II to procure pure bred Arabian stallions for the cavalry of their respective armies. To this end he went to various parts of the Arab world and, in particular, to Najd , after having touched other places on the Arabian Peninsula, including Tayma' and ?a'il , which he described in the book Itinéraire de Jérusalem au Neged septentrional of 1865 (English version) Northern Najd, A Journey from Jerusalem to Anaiza in Qasim , 1938). Guarmani was also the author of other publications, among which perhaps the best known was Al Kamsa: the pure blood Arabian horse: study of 16 years in Syria, Palestine, Egypt and in the deserts of Arabia (English version The Pure-Bred Arabian Horse , edited with a new Introduction by Angelo Pesce, translated from the Italian by Philip Ward, Immel Publishing, Jeddah , Saudi Arabia ).
