Weichselbaumer wurde vor allem als Autor antikisierender historischer Dramen bekannt, die schon zu seinen Lebzeiten wenig Erfolg auf dem Theater hatten. Sein Drama Die Hermannschlacht wurde, von Hippolyte Chelard als große romantische Oper vertont, 1835 in München uraufgeführt.
