Cette édition reprend la traduction de 1584 non censurée, établie à partir de l'édition latine de Bâle de 1554 ("De subtilitate libri XXI"). Le fameux médecin, mathématicien et astrologue Jérôme Cardan (1501-1576) y évoque une multitude de thèmes : des métaux ("Elémens métalliques", des pierres, des sens, de l'Univers, des plantes et des bêtes, des arts, "des inventions merveilleuses", etc., développés en 21 chapitres, conformément aux 21 clefs du Tarot d'après Guaita. L'ouvrage est orné de très nombreuses figures, gravées sur bois, dans le texte. One of his two encyclopaedias of natural science, this work contains "a little of everything : from cosmology to the construction of machines ; from the usefulness of natural sciences to the evil influence of demons ; from the laws of mechanics to cryptology. It is a mine of facts, both real and imaginary ; of notes on the state of the sciences ; of superstition, technology, alchemy and various branches of the occult" (DSB). The similarity with Leonardo da Vinci led some historians (for instance Pierre Duhem) to suppose that Cardano had used Leonardo's manuscript notes. In this work, Cardano gives "the first description of a flour-sifting machine, and mentions the sifting property of undulating air, a fact only rediscovered by F. W. Hieronymus Cardanus (1501-1576), was a famous Italian polymath, whose interests ranged from physics to biology and astrology to philosophy. He was also one of the most influential mathematicians of the Renaissance. His work on the life of Emperor Nero, the Neronis Encomium, was first published in Basle in 1562. The engraved title page depicts a male figure (the author?) crowning with a laurel wreath the bust of Emperor Nero. An armillary sphere is also depicted. The engraving is after the work of the Italian engraver Aeneas Vico (1523 1567), as testified by the inscription (Ex Aenea Vico Parmensi). Willelms 1612.

The first volume consisted of the Somniorum Synesiorum Omnis Generis Insomnia Explicantes, a work dealing with dreams, their classification, origin and interpretation. The second volume contained eleven shorter philosophical and medical treaties, among which was the Encomium Neronis, a new biographical treatment of Nero, the much-maligned Roman emperor. It is a work that still has much to teach us, four and a half centuries later. Today, the name of Girolamo Cardano pop ups here and there in books dealing with certain scientific matters. But he probably left his greatest mark on the study of algebra with the publication in Nuremberg in 1545 of his Ars Magna, which contained the solution to cubic equations. His frankness-which reaches its apex in his discussion of the sexual habits attributed to Nero- can be shocking to a modern reader.
