UNE RARE RELIURE HOLLANDAISE DU XVIIE SIÈCLE EN VÉLIN ROSE AUX ARMES D'UN ÉRUDIT MUNICHOIS In-18° (112 x 64 mm), [8] ff. - 608 pp., vélin rose, dos à 4 nerfs orné, encadrement à l'or avec fleurons en écoinçons et armes sur les plats, tranches dorées (reliure de la 1e moitié du XVIIIe siècle). Seconde édition, parue chez Bonaventure et Abraham Elzevier. Il s'agit d'une réimpression de l'originale de 1627, avec des pièces liminaires différentes. Une troisième édition, parue en 1656 avec le titre gravé à la date toujours de 1635, porte la signature « Elzevirius / Lugd. Bat. 1656 » à l'épître dédicatoire ; elle est de moins bonne facture (Willems, 421). Jérôme Cardan (ou Gerolamo Cardano, 1501-1576) fut l'un des grands érudits de la Renaissance italienne. Polymathe et précoce, il s'essaya aussi bien à la médecine, aux mathématiques, à la cryptographie, à l'horlogerie et à l'optique qu'à la magie et à l'astrologie. Son intérêt pour l'occultisme lui valut une accusation d'hérésie, l'Inquisition lui reprochant notamment d'avoir établi l'horoscope de Jésus-Christ. L'Arcana politica parut après sa mort sous le titre Proxeneta, seu, De Prudentia civili (Elzevier, 1627). Dans ce « manuel de succès », Cardan aborde des sujets aussi divers que la gestion d'une maisonnée, l'élevage du bétail ou encore l'art de la dissimulation politique. Composé au cours des dix dernières années de sa vie, l'Arcana politica témoigne également des transformations sociales et politiques amenées par la Contre-réforme. PROVENANCE : 1. Andreas Felix von Oefele, dit « Evelius » (1706-1780), armes sur les plats. Bibliothécaire de la bibliothèque nationale de Leuven (Allemagne), Andreas Felix von Oefele fut également le précepteur des princes Maximilien et Clément de Bavière. En 1746, il fut appointé conservateur de la bibliothèque de Munich, où il catalogua près de 20 000 volumes. Il fut l'un des membres fondateurs de l'académie bavaroise des sciences publia un ouvrage en 10 volumes, Lebensgeschichten der gelehrtesten Männer Bayerns (Vies des hommes les plus érudits de Bavière). 2.
